Rome Apartment - 1st time and with toddler

My wife and I will be traveling to Rome for about 1 week (after a week in Genova) in late June/early July. This is our first time there and we will have our 18-month old son with us. We would like to stay in one location the entire time (near grocery store, restaurant, attractions, etc).

What area of Rome should I be looking at? Does anyone have a particular apartment to recommend?

I'd recommend www.sleepintaly.com.

The actual apartment we stayed in was on the fourth floor with 80+ steps and no elevator so definitely not somewhere I'd choose with a toddler but it was in a great area near the Pantheon.

I would suggest you stay as centrally as possible - so you can go back to the apt for a break easily. Anywhere around Piazza Navona, Campo de Fiori or even the Pantheon. Anywhere you will be close to restaurants, supermarkets etc.

Ask about noise - esp in the bedroom(s)- and either stay low down or make sure there is an elevator. With floors, remember that the street level is considered the ground floor, the next the first and so on. Check the size of the apt - some are incredibly small. You may want to consider airconditioning- depending on how bothered you might be by potential heat.

That time of the year we would always look for some outdoor space or a balcony - but you will pay more - and we don't have a toddler to worry about.

Check out www.slowtrav.com for many reviews of apartments and rental agencies in Rome. We used Real Rome last year and were very happy with them.

We liked the Domus Julia, the annex to the Hotel Julia, near the Spanish Steps, directly below the Barberini Palace. We had a very nice double room, new bathroom, and the use of a kitchen/dining room. Good rates, and a nice full breakfast incuded in the pretty breakfast room of the Hotel Julia. It's a good option, since you have the services of the front desk, just in case you have questions. I believe we had an elevator.

I would also recommend Sleep in Italy or Real Rome with Tim Peterson <sp?> - if you email either company I think they will be helfpul in getting you a place.

That is a busy time so I would get on it. We reseved an apartment around this time last year for July in Rome. I would not recommend our apartment as we climbed up around 5/6 flights of stairs and that was a pain for us - let alone with a toddler.

I stayed in the Spanish steps area - I would not recommend this area either - I am sure others will have a better area then that to recommend for you.

There is a lovely park by there that your son might like. We rented bikes but there were other things that a younger child might enjoy - Villa Borgesse <sp> park.

We are going to stay here: http://www.sleepinitaly.com/files/apt_giulia-gold.html
which looks like a lovely apartment, and got a good review on tripadvisor.com. It's quite roomy, and apparently is about a 15 minute walk from Castel Sant'Angelo, so it is still in the historic center, in the neighbohood of Campo de' fiori, etc.

It's on the ground floor inside the courtyard of an old palazzo, which would be helpful for you with a little one. And it is supposedly very quiet too. We won't be there until May, so I can't tell you yet whether we will agree with this, but it sounds very good to us.

We stayed in an apartment in the Trastevere area. It is not centrally located but more of a residential neighborhood. It IS easy to get to whatever attractions that you need to see.
We booked our apartment via VRBO.com. The one we stayed in is called Casa Daniela and was very nice. It had two bedrooms and A/C which may be a must depending on the time of year you go.

Here is a review I did on Montevecchio Bis apt through Sleep in Italy. While it has no windows, it may work well for you. You cannot beat the location.

Remember that there is a mistake in my review and you cannot see St. Peters from it, as I note in a later post in the thread.

if your son is still falling a lot I'd watch out for the stone floors that are in a lot of the Rome apts. We stayed with our daughter last year in an apt that was great and she wasn't walking (or moving) at the time but I remembered thinking that I'd be worried with that floor and the stairs in the apt if she had been a little older. You will have a great time though!
