Rome and south- 7 days
My wife and I are planing to travel to Rome in April. We would like to visit Rome, Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento and Paestum. Likely, we would spend the last part of the trip sightseeing in Rome before flying back. I have some questions...
1.How many days would you spend in Rome? 2.Would you suggest a car or train for visiting the towns south of Rome. (We do like to drive, but are not averse to train travel).
3. What towns or cities would you suggest we use as a stopping point and base as we travel.
4. Any suggestions for hotels would be nice. With the falling dollar we are looking for inexpensive accomodations.
Thanks!
Fred

Hi Fred,
I think that the Naples/AC part of my trip report will help you.

I visited the same places (minus Paestum) in Nov 03. If you've never been to Rome, 3 days is minimum, 4 would be better. Driving a car is no fun, esp on the Amalfi Coast Drive which is winding and narrow. You will spend so much energy concentrating on driving that you forget to take in the scenery. You can take a train down to Naples, then change for the private train line Circumvesuviana to Sorrento. Sorrento would be a good home base for daytrips (to Pompeii, Capri and Amalfi).
Have a good trip.
