Hello, I will be traveling to Rome and Germany this summer along with my husband and our 15 year old daughter. We are thinking about flying into Rome, spending time there and then head towards Germany on an overnight sleeping train. I would love to hear your thoughts on how many days we should stay in Rome and where we should go in Germany. Berlin is a must and for sentimental reasons, Munich. Traveling for 2 weeks and happily relying on train travel. Looking forward to your replies. Thanks.

If you have never been to Rome and are landing there after a long flight I would do a minimum of 4 nights there - probably 5 - to really get a feel for the city. In terms of Germany Berlin and Munich are both good choices - but I would also ouconsider getting out into the countryside - a visit to the alps if at all possible.
My kids backpacked through Germany last year for about 12 days. They started in Berlin, then went to Rothenburg o.d. Tauber, Fuessen, and Munich. They traveled all by train and booked their train travel online (www.bahn.com) before leaving the States because they knew where they were going. This saved them money and insured they had a reserved seat on all the trains.
From Munich, they flew to Greece for 5 days and then flew on to Rome for a couple of days. They had been to Rome previously, so didn't feel the need for extra days there. I think 3 days in Rome would be plenty of time.
A good way to see the German countryside would be a day trip from Berlin to the Spreewald where you can rent a canoe or kayak and paddle along the Spreewald. Take the train from Berlin to Luebbenau and then rent a boat. We made this trip a couple times when we lived in Berlin and our kids did it again last year. We used Bootsverleih Richter http://www.bootsverleih-richter.de/
