Rome & Amalfi Coast

Hello everyone,

My husband and I have booked flights to Rome and the Amalfi for our honeymoon in May. We have a total of 2 weeks for both. We need help with our itinerary as places are getting booked fast and our original honeymoon destination we had to cancel due to the Zika!

Day 1- We fly into Rome AM
Day 2- Rome
Day 3- Rome
Day 4- Rome
Day 5- Leave Rome- head to Positano as we check into Palazzo Murat (thinking only time we spurge)
Day 6- Positano
Day 7-Positano Check out of hotel...

Day 7-14 free

WHAT SHOULD WE DO?

a) Is that enough time for Rome?

b) Originally I wanted to move along the coast from Sorrento to Amalfi etc direction. But I wanted to stay at Murat in Positano so whats the best way to see- Sorrento, Ravello, Amalfi and also Capri as well as Pompeii on our way in or out of AC... (stay put in Positano as it's central?)

c) Great accommodations- would like to stay under $200 if we can with a great view
We do want to do some hikes, so I've read the Walk of God's is great. We were also of renting a car once we are in the Amalfi Coast so it's easier to travel at our own pace etc...

d)Great things to do in those places?

e)Great places to eat?

I assume you're flying out of Rome and would therefore have to return at the end of the trip.

I would add more time in Positano. One full day is hardly enough time to see anything, and you've already listed things like Capri and Pompeii that each take about a day to travel to and explore. Five days total would be good. More is always better. Don't rent a car for the AC thinking it will make getting around easier. Rent the car in Salerno or Sorrento when you're leaving the AC and heading elsewhere.

Depending on what you want to see in Rome, I'd add more time there too. At a minimum, spend the last night in or near Rome.

Where else you go depends on your interests which you haven't mentioned. Another city? Or small towns in the country? Art, food, scenery, history, architecture....???

You don't have much time to contemplate your itinerary if you're on a strict budget.

Look at the Fontanella Borghese Hotel in Rome. Or do a search on booking.com.

Agree with Jean. One full day in Positano - you have no time to see anything. Just stay put and enjoy the town or add more time. I don't see your point in renting a car for just one day and in any case, traffic is usually gridlocked, parking costs 40 euro per day etc etc. - Palazzo Murat is in a pedestrian zone and therefore has no on-site parking.
Your plans are very skewed if you think one day on the Amalfi Coast is enough time to accomplish Sorrento Ravello Amalfi Capri Pompeii and the Path of the Gods.

Personally I would land in Rome and immediately head to position for a week. You can see Amalfi, ravello, do a day touring the area by boat, Capri, Pompeii etc. Tonnes to do and see for a week.

Take a look at perhaps renting an apartment with a balcony overlooking the sea. We used www.summerinitaly.com

Then I would make my way to Rome for a week. Again you could rent an apartment, do a day trip to Orvieto, or Tivoli etc.

Happy planning!

You do need more time on the Amalfi Coast, especially for what you want to see and possibly including Pompeii, Herculaneum and Naples.

A car is not convenient on the AC. Ferries are great for seeing the AC. You could also take busses. For the AC, Rome (Florence or Venice), you do not need one at all, but you could rent a car for a few days in Tuscany to go at your own pace for hill towns, wineries, etc.

With two weeks, you could choose one more place to visit. Tuscany would make sense logistically, but you could also do Venice (not both).

Rather than stay in Rome at both the beginning and end of the trip, plan all time in Rome at the end.

Options: A would be my recommendation.

A. Arrive in Rome.
Head straight on to Florence and spend a few days in Tuscany.
Travel to Positano for Amalfi, Ravello, etc. Stay longer in Positano or
Move to Sorrento for a couple of days to see Pompeii, Capri and Naples.
End in Rome.

B. Arrive Rome.
Head straight to Sorrento for a couple of days to see Pompeii, Capri, etc.
Move to Positano for Amalfi and Ravello.
Travel to Tuscany (or fly to Venice) for a few days.
End in Rome.

C. Arrive Rome.
Head straight to Venice.
Fly to Naples, get driver to Positano. Stay longer in Positano or
Move to Sorrento (as above).
End in Rome.

I also love Jamikin's plan. Just spend a week in each place. Get apartments instead of hotels. That would be a wonderful honeymoon. The first time we went to the AC, we spent 10 days and it wasn't enough time.

I am with Jamikins, as well. If you are leaving from Rome, then just make that week 2.

We flew into Rome and went straight to Positano (splurged, via private car). I am sure you will love Palazzo Murat. I would not want a car on the AC (and I don't think I am alone on that). In Positano, we enjoyed Le Tre Sorelle on the beach. A drink with a great view (and the euros that go with the great view) would be at Franco's bar next to Le Sirenuse...higher up than Palazzo Murat.

You could walk up to the top of Positano from Murat to get to the steps leading to Nocelle (there are a lot of them so go early before the sun gets too high) and hit the path to Bomerano. Or (easier), take the bus to Nocelle and go from there. Take water!

If you enjoy wine, we had a wonderful trip with "Swirl the Glass" to Tramonti for a tasting with lunch there.

You can click on my name to find trip reports from Positano last September and from Rome a few years ago.

Enjoy your trip--loved the AC and Rome and am sure you will too.

Agree that you are very late getting a hotel in Positano in May. I would book something cancelable you can afford now and then look further for other options. And $200 is not a lot for a nice hotel with a great view - esp at this late date.

And agree for a honeymoon I would go straight to Positano for a week and then spend the second week in Rome, with perhaps a couple of day trips.

That would be a trip that is very relaxed and allows you to unwind/relax as well as see the major sights.

Vote #47 for a week in Positano and a week in Rome. Upon arriving in Rome, take the fast train to Naples then prearrange for a driver to meet you and take you to Positano.

Then to get to Rome you can take the ferry to Salerno and then train to Rome.

Book your hotel ASAP, as many places in Positano book a year in advance.

Or better yet book apartments. But hurry - I booked my Positano apartment for my June trip in July 2015.

Thank you everyone for your responses, we are looking at traveling to the AC now, because our original plan to travel to Argentina was cancelled due to the Zika virus, leaving little time to book a second place with ample research ahead of time...

We are staying in Positano for longer than the two nights, those were the only dates available at the Palazzo Murat...

Sorry Day 7-14 free meant we have the entire week on the Amalfi coast and not just the one day to see it all...

I love to go to museums, galleries, to be immersed in the culture, a big foodies and love to try out great restaurants- authentic food, some Michelin Star places. I've read Don Alfonso and Donna Rosa are great eats, so we may try those out...but also looking for the traditional what an Italian granny would make for an authentic dinner type places. My husband doesn't like the museums etc but loves hiking and is one to relax more...so we need a happy medium! We will do the Walk of Gods but are there any other walks you'd suggest, where the views are amazing from the top?

What are the top things you would say to do in Rome?

A very sincere THANK YOU to everyone for taking out the time to write back and share such great ideas, they will help us have a better trip and I hope we hear back with the above!

XO

The Sunflower Guide series has a good hiking book for the AC.

Don Alfonso is amazing - we spent one night there on the way to Positano one year.

We love the town of Cetara and our favorite restaurant on the AC is Acquapazza in Cetara.
