Rome Airport to Monticiano
I will be meeting people at the Rome airport and we need to travel from
there to a farmhouse near Monticiano. We do not wish to drive but prefer to take the train, or bus, to Siena continuing on the same day to the farmhouse
near Monticiano. Is there taxi service from the train or bus depot in Siena
that will take us to the farmhouse? (A party of three adults.) Any suggestions helpful. Thank you. Mary B.

There are multiple buses per day from Rome to Siena (about 20€). Travel time is 3 hours which is as fast as taking a train from Rome and doesn't require changes (the train does).
http://www.sena.it/Home/78-1-en.html
Taking the bus would require training into Rome first on the local FR1 train (8€) to Rome's Tiburtina station (not the Leonardo Express which goes to Rome Termini) and it takes about 45 minutes. There are also shuttle buses, but would probably take longer as they stop at Termini first. The FR1 runs every 15 minutes.
From Siena, there is a bus, but doesn't run often and not on Sunday. #116 (2-3€)and travel time is about one hour. Both the Sena bus and the bus to Monticiano appear to use Piazza Gramsci as the hub.

Another (perhaps faster?) option would be to take the FR1 from the airport to Rome's Trastevere or Osteinse stations (depends on train/time) where you would change to a train to Grosseto (about 3 hours total from FCO). Price varies from 18-32€ depending on train. From Grosseto, you could probably get a taxi/driver or perhaps there is a bus from there. It appears to be about the same distance as from Siena to Monticiano. If there is a bus from Grosseto, it would probably be Rama or Tiemme.

Mary,
While I don't understand what you will do at a farm house near Montalcino without a car may I suggest training to Chiusi then get a taxi to the farm or use a private driver from Chiusi http://montalcinotravel.com/intro_eng.htm
neither will be cheap.

The timetable for the Line 116 bus between Siena and Monticiano mentioned by kybourbon:

I no longer see a bus connection from FCO to Tiburtina. If you don't want to take the FR1, you could book a limo to Tiburtina. It will probably cost a bit more than the 40€ (for 3 people) listed since Tiburtina is a bit further.

Bus connections between Grosseto and Monticiano are very limited. It appears you would take the bus from Grosseto to either Roccastrada or Incrociatella and change for Monticiano (change time is 1 minute). Bus 2264 to 2254 or 2257 to 2258.

I'm not sure why it lists changing at Incrociatella in their search function (which is not user friendly) as it seems Roccastrada would be easier.

Mary. If these schedules don't work out for you let me just say that I drove twice, by myself, to Montalcino from FCO last Summer. I did have a GPS. But really it was not difficult. And the whole trip takes less than three hours.
Good luck whatever you decide.

kybourbon. I know she is not going to Montalcino. I went to Montalcino and they are not far apart.
In fact, we were in a villa closer to Pienza and the public transportation really wasn't that easy to accomplish.
It seems it would be difficult for her and very time consuming.
I jsut wanted to tell her that driving does not have to be so daunting if the public transportation does not work out, that is all.

The farmhouse's owner's son will take my me and my son directly to the farmhouse but was concerned about my friends arriving later at the Rome airport. I'm hoping they will have a rental car and we can direct them by phone. (The trains, shuttles, buses, etc. are unpredictable on a weekend.)
This will certainly be an adventure and will determine if my sweetie is a
keeper!

That's not true. Trains run every day. Sena buses run every day. The local buses in Tuscany run Monday through Saturday. Sunday is the only day they don't run and some areas will have Sunday service.
I agree that you need a car(s) somewhere that remote.
