Rome

I'm planning a trip for my girlfriend and I towards the end of June. I've budgeted around $1000 dollars for food and sightseeing for six days. Does this seem about right? Also I'd love some advice on places to eat/visit.

Hi, I'm new here and going to Rome for the first time next week. Is that $1K for just you or both of you? $1K for two people is not enough IMO. Of course it depends on what you like to eat, if you plan to drink and what kind of sightseeing you are planning.

Get the following Apps- "Katie Parla's Rome" and Elizabeth Minchilli's "Eat Rome" to get you started with food in Rome.

$1000 is nearly €900 -- you are only going for 6 days so yes, you can manage as long as you are semi-careful/frugal. No 'splurge meals' and stay away from soft drinks/cocktails. If breakfast is included w/ your hotel that will help too.

(I might wait til one has actually visited before advising others)

If it's really only for food and sightseeing, it's plenty in my opinion. No fancy restaurants, but in my experience you can have a good dinner, including wine, at some EUR 25, and who needs elaborate lunches when there is a marvellous city around you to be explored?
I take it you don't need guided tours to bring you to the places you want to visit. Any half-decent guidebook will inspire you, and with a not too bad old-fashioned paper map at hand you'll find you way.

Yes, it's doable. Drink wine not sodas, really it's cheaper! I'd second the recommendation for the apps. There are food tours which can be fun and you could bring a walking tour book with you which is a great way to see the city. There are some more suggestions on my blog...

The last time I was in Rome I had a hotel near Termini station (ridiculously expensive for my standards) and always good find a restaurant in the neighbourhood which served a decent dinner at a decent price. In my experience one should be careful with places with loud advertisements aimed at tourists. The restaurants which look they've been there for ages are generally to be trusted.

My money saving tips for Rome:

stand at the bar and drink an expresso [just ask for "un caffe"] rather than sitting down with a large cappuccino.

little corner cafes will sell you "tramezzini" [triangular sandwiches] for about €1.50 -€2 each and a glass of wine/beer for another €2 or so.

take small water bottles with you and fill them at the water fountains you see all over Rome - the water tastes wonderful and is perfectly safe [which is sadly not what a french mother told her son when she saw me doing just that at the forum] .

Buy some bus tickets at a "tabac" and use them to get around the city cheaply.

Buy fruit at a supermarket to eat as you sit on the bus.

try to group the places that you want to see together so that you don't waste time, and energy going back and forth across the city.

take time to sit down outside a bar and enjoy the people going past. it's a lot of fun.

Go into any church you find open and just look round. there is almost certainly going to be something of interest. and if nothing else it will be cool and you can rest your feet.

To save yourself some time, buy tickets in advance if you plan to visit the Vatican Museums and the Colosseum.

There's a very good tip-based walking tour that we enjoyed. http://www.newromefreetour.com/

Try Roscioli and Forno in Campo dei Fiori for wonderful pizza that won't break the bank. I still miss the pizza pomodoro at Roscioli.

We had a good meal at La Sagriesta near the Pantheon and it was not expensive.

I'll be in Rome for the first time in 2 weeks. So excited! We're being a little frugal as well since we will also being in Naples for the day, Paris and London. I got a lot of great deals booking early. I'm talking as early as February/March for an October trip. Our hotel is only $70/night but if it was booked 2 months ago, it would be $165/night in Rome. We are doing the free walking tours (you should tip the guide of course), Colosseum and we are taking the metro bus/trains. I did prebook the Eating Italy Food Tour's Taste of Testaccio for the 2 of us. It's 4 hours at $75/ea USD and has very high reviews. I also pre-booked the high speed train to Naples so we can go to Da Michele Pizzeria of course! We're also taking the train to Pompeii Scavi to see the ruins an climb Mt. Vesuvius. No tour group, just researched how to do it on our own. Last day we are doing the Vatican Scavi tour first thing in the morning, then the Basilica and climb the dome and just seeing the highlights of the museum. I bought us filtered water bottles that we are taking with us and I also researched some nice places for "local" breakfasts, lunches and dinners.

Thank you for all the information. The only thing left to ask would be what to see/do. We'll be staying at the Navona Theatre Hotel for 6 nights. We both love art but aren't quite sure where to go. The only thing we know for sure is that we'd like to see the Sistine chapel, and pompeii as well as attend mass on Sunday. Any suggestions on what else we should do or places we should go?

Duckfreak,
What are your interests? Go to the library and/or watch some YouTube videos on Rome to determine what most interests you.

There are a plethora of interesting sites in Rome...the famous ones, Trevi, Pantheon, Vatican Museums, Spanish Steps, Coliseo, Forum, Castel St. Angelo, many different monuments and churches(some with splendid art work of their own) and less famous sites but equally interesting ones, too & interesting neighborhoods. Fortunately, you have plenty of time to decide what excites you the most.

Don't forget to leave time for wandering....

Your budget is doable but certainly not generous. If you are fine with doing a stand up snack for lunch (or a picnic of food from a market) and a very casual dinner it should cover foods, entrances, public transit and a gelato now and then.

Be careful not to order sodas (tiny and expensive) but stick to wine or water.

And make sure you have access to other funds in case you need it.

I would list the major sights you want to see and check the entrance costs to be sure you have allowed enough for entrances and trains to/fro from any out of town sights.
