Rome - Walking Tours
Can anyone recommend a good walking tour for the ancient areas of Rome (i.e. Colosseum, Roman Forum, Pantheon, etc.). I have heard of the Enjoy Rome company, but their tours do not go inside the Colosseum. Are there other options that offer walking tours that go inside these monuments? Thanks!

My husband and I were in Rome last month and did a Through Eternity private tour. Did go inside the Colosseum, all through the Forum, the Pantheon, also the Vatican museum/St Peters. (It was a long day and well worth it) Through Eternity also has small group tours. Check their website--www.througheternity.com

You might check out Icon Tours- www.icontours.com. I was impressed with their prices and website. We plan on taking the ancient rome tour in July.

We just went on a Vatican tour with Icontours last week. The web site is www.icontours.com I know that they also have a tour that goes inside the ancient areas. The guide we had was excellent. They are all native English speaking guides and keep the groups relatively small, ours was fifteen I believe. I usually get bored on tours, however I didn't on this one. I believe the owner has an art history degree and I learned an unbelievable amount from him on our walk to the tour. The best testimonial that I can give is that half of the group was wanting to get him or someone from his company to be their guide for the next day.

On a trip last March we used Rome walks (www.romewalks.com). The tours were led by young americans living in Rome. We used them for Vatican City and for The Colliseum. They guides were very friendly, knowledgeable and fun.
Just a tip, try to avoid Vatican City on Saturday, it was a ZOO!!!

I agree with the above posters that Scala Reale now called Context Rome is tops. Our tour of the Vatican Museum was the highlight of our last two week tour of Italy. Expensive but well worth it. YOu can reserve it online.

We used romewalks for coloseum and scala reale for Vatican. Both were great. The romewalks guide had a phd in Roman archeology and history, and really knew her stuff and had a ton of interesting information that made it a great tour. There were also only 6 people in the group (they generally limit the size of the tours).

We used ICON in April for our Ancient Rome tour. They were fabulous. 25 euro per person, plus 8 euro for Colosseum entrance. The tour was only supposed to be 2 1/2 hours and Mike kept talking and showing for 4. It was great! He also took us into the Mamertine prison where Peter and Paul were kept before their execusions. It was very moving and most tours don't take people here. You can actually touch the water they prayed for the baptized the other prisoners!

My family and I took this tour a few years ago and were thoroughly satified. The tour guide was an older gentlemen - so refinded and knowledgable.
We also took tours of the major basillicas and of the Colosseum with American Express.
Let's face it, visiting Rome is a special experience and you want an expert to introduce you to the splendors of this city.
