Romantic Road tips
I am planning on driving the Romantische Strasse in late September from Frankfurt to Munich. I have 3 days to explore and am having a difficult time deciding which towns to sleep overnight and which ones to spend just the day. Any advice on an itinerary?

Klasher,
Sorry no one has responded, and I can't give any first-hand info, but I am going to do the same trip in a few weeks. If you will put "Romantic Road" into the search box, I think you will find there have been a lot of previous discussions about towns along the way. I have decided to stay in Wurzburg and Rothenburg, then head out to a couple of other towns during those days and spend evenings in Rothenburg. Maybe if I top this, some who have been there will join in. PJK

I will try to help, as I was living over in that area in 03, near the city of Ansbach, which is about 20 minutes east of Rothenburg.
First, We thought Wuerzburg was a very nice city to see. Try to go see the Residenz (which is different than that beautiful fortress looking building up high above the river.
From Wuerzburg heading south, before you hit Rothenburg, there is a little town of Weikersheim. The town square is worth a peek. The Schloss (castle?) is neat, but the tour is only in German.
Somewhere between that town and Rothenburg but about 2 or 3 KM off that 2 lane direct road, is a small church with a magnificent wooden carved altar. It is directly across the road from the "thimble museum"...which I have heard is not worth seeing.
On to Rothenburg, which is very neat. Try to stay overnight, as the crowds of tourists go away. A must-see is the "night watchman's tour", in English at 8pm meet at the town square. (double check the time)
Now, about 8 or 10km east of Rothenburg, just past the autobahn...is Burg Colmberg (or Colmburg) in the town of Colmburg. Apparently a very neat place to spend the night, but we had a very nice meal there once or twice. It is up on a bluff overlooking the flat land around Rothenburg...and apparently was a good place to "spot" approaching caravans of traders who crossing the area.
Another town to see is Dinkelsbuhl, but might not want to stay overnight.
From that point, south to the southern end of the R road......I have to say is sort of "boring". Maybe I shouldn't say that, as I am not very familiar with that area. I think the R road gets exciting and picturesque again as you get to the southernmost end of it. I cannot be much help there.
Also...and I am not sure if Augsburg is considered "on" the R road or not...but we drove into town and strolled the shopping district. It apparently has a lot of history to it,,,,but we were too over-saturated with tourism and history by that time.
I have always used Rick Steves' books for our travel tips, and always find them handy.
you can email me if you have questions [email protected]
Incidentally, that area is known for its dry white wine.....must try some.
