Romantic Road Itinerary

My boyfriend and I are driving the Romantic Road this coming September. As of now our itinerary looks like so:

Flying into Frankfort - 1 night stay
Wurzburg - 2 nights
Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber - 1 night
Nordlingen - day trip (no overnight)
Augsburg - 1 or 2 nights
Schwangau - day trip (no overnight)
Munich - 3 nights

We are in Germany for 10 days. After I've tallied up the nights above I have an extra night. I will happily take ANY suggestions. FYI, we have a car. Thanks!

I see that as only 3 hotels---Rothenburg, Schwangau, and Munich. One niters seldom make sense.

If this plan means that you intend to visit Nordlingen as a day trip form Rothenburg (or as a stopover on the way to Augsburg) - with only one day planned in Rothenburg, the easy answer is to add that extra night to Rothenburg.

24 hours doesn't do Rothenburg and Nordlingen justice. Dinkelsbuehl is in between them and worth a stop, too.

You will probably hear people say you should spend the extra night in Fussen (Hohenschwangau) but that would leave you with 3 one night stopovers and that could be rough in 10 days.

Frankfurt 1
Wurzburg 2
Rothenburg 2
Augsburg 1
Munich 3

is what I am thinking would work.

Also, Wurzburg is so close to Frankfurt, you could get there easily after landing - either by train or the short drive (1:15) - and open up another night on the route.

Make sure your Munich visit doesn't coincide with Oktoberfest unless that is your plan and you already have lodging.

Oktoberfest and trade fairs make for high room rates during September.

Agree that any Romantic Road trip should include Dinkelsbuehl but suggest you try to spend at least a couple of hours in Feuchtwangen. It was a real surprise for us and we thought it was lovely.

Thank you all for your advice. It is clear to me that I need to sit down and map it all out. Please continue to send suggestions and I will be sure to ask questions as I plan.

Is Augsburg somewhere you need a lot of time to visit, or could you see whatever you want on the way to Fussen and spend the night there so you can see the castles first thing in the morning before driving to Munich.

I think this is a good plan but agree that you should include a stop in Dinkelsbuehl. I personally would spend the extra night at Hohenschwangau - Hotel Mueller is a nice place with a great restaurant, amazing views of the castles lit up at night, and by staying there you automatically get excellent ticket service for the castles. (If you arrive the night before they will have your tickets waiting for you in the morning; you can either walk up to the castles or take a horse-drawn carriage.)

My family did the Romantic Road in 5 one-night stops and did not find it overly grueling, so I think having a few one-nighters is not a terrible thing in this case.

Okay, so after mapping out the route and discussing with boyfried, please see revised itinerary below. Feel free to make further suggestions.

Frankfort - 1 night
Wurzburg - 2 nights
Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber - 1 night
Feuchtwangen/Dinkelsbuehl - day trips
Nordlingen - 1 night
Augsburg - 1 night
Hohenschwangau - 1 night
Munich - 3 nights

I realize there are a few one niters, which I'm not afraid of; however, I may be willing to cut out Frankfort to add a night elsewhere. Thoughts? To be honest, I thought we would stay in Frankfort to get over our jetlag and stay at a lovely little hotel that came recommended (http://www.tablethotels.com/Gerbermu...011-09-15&nC=0). Worth it? Are there any other places we should consider cutting out to see more of another? Augsburg?

Thanks!

Why are you spending a night in Kentucky?

Sorry, I just thought I would get in before all the others that rail on misspellings.
