Romantic Anniversary

This year my wife and I will celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. Our anniversary is in late November. My wife means everything in the world to me and I want her to have the time of her life. Would it be better to go to Paris or Venice for our November anniversary? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I really want to get this one right for my bride.

Tough question. In late November the weather in Paris can be unpleasant, or it can be cool and crisp. My experience is that if you are there for only a few days, you could encounter anything between those extremes.

On the other hand, by late November you could possibly encounter the high-water phenomenon in Venice. That's when the water rises above the level of many of the piazzas, including the St. Mark's square. Whether you will encounter it while you are there is really a bit unpredictable.

If those were your only two choices, I would probably recommend Paris just because of the variety of sights, sounds, and experiences you can have. Venice is wonderful and I have been there many times, but I'd avoid it in late November and December.

I'm sure many others will do what I'm about to do: recommend yet a third possibility. My suggestion would be to go to somewhere farther south if you want warmer weather. Otherwise, if you don't mind some cold and possibly some rain, Paris is a great place to visit at any time. Another great destination of my choice would be Vienna. Good luck.

We are not limited to Paris or Venice. Those just seem to be common destinations for anniversaries. Please let me know if you think another destination would be better.

Elberko, yeah, last year we saw Phantom for our anniversary. (not sure why that is relevant, though)

Our anniversary is early November and we have gone to Paris many times to celebrate. There might be cold and raw days or drizzly days, but it is still SO romantic.
Do some reading up on the two cities and see if what you want to do on this trip will work better in one of them more than the other. I want to go to Venice but when it is warmer and drier..November would not be the time for me.
Good luck.

We celebrated our delayed honeymoon in Paris in November (20 years ago) and absolutely loved it. I'd say the only thing that bothered us was this hacking cough we got from the radiators. Don't laugh -- we're from L.A., and the cold air, dampness and the radiators seemed to go straight to the chest. We didn't have this problem outside, just once inside.

First of all elberko, jnscastle took his wife to the Phantom November 2004.

jnscastle, how I love a romantic husband!! Truly I do.

About Venice (as I have not been to Paris I am sorry to say). Venice IMHO is wonderful anytime (except the latter part of July and the month of August).

I don't find the acqua alta a big problem as that is basically in Piazza SanMarco....however what could be or not be a problem for you is the fog.

The fog can be terrible. And if you have limited time, if you have to say be back to work at a specific time this could be a problem for you because the fog can cause the airplanes trying to depart the San Marco Airport at Venice to be delayed a long time. And usually one has to change planes at another European airport to catch the flight back to the US. I assume you live in the US since you saw Phantom in NY last November.

Also keep in mind that arrivals in Venice can be delayed due to the fog.

If your schedule could be flexable both arriving and departing then I think Venice could be very beautiful and romantic. But if you two would be stressed out due to airplane delays it could of course be a disaster.

Again, I have not been to Paris but you have responses from Fodorites here that have.

Wishing you an early Happy Anniversary and good wishes to you with your decision.

I would pick Paris for the incredible amount of wonderful indoor sites, the great warming and delicious food, and the easy of transportation. If the weather is not optimal, it will still knock your socks off.

Thanks for the happy anniversay wishes. My wife and I use the same log on and I guess that can be confusing. We two are one. Phantom was great and so was the Westin in Times Square.

It sounds like Paris might be the best destination for this year's anniversary. I have checked the Paris super thread and Hotel de Varenne seems like a nice hotel. Tripadvisor has good reviews, but Fodorites have been silent (I think) thus far. Does anyone have experience with this hotel?

Sorry, jnscastle, I didn't notice your other post was last year. I usually check a poster's other posts for additional info before answering, and there seemed to be conflicting info.

Hi jnscastle - my husband and I will celebrate our 20th anniversary this October in Paris and Provence. I don't think you can go wrong with Paris at all. My hubby has never been (I've been twice) but I can't wait to show it to him.

Paris gets my vote!

Why these two cities, Paris and Venice would be a weather risk, however, Rome, Monte Carlo, Southern Spain all would be better choices. Nothing wrong with the cities you mentioned, but I believe your should consider widening your choices.

Hi JN,

You have picked the two top cities, for a romantic anniversary.

My thinking is that, if the weather works against you, Paris is a safer shelter.

The Varenne looks very nice, and a good price. You're only a couple blocks from a metro stop.

I'd ask them what you get for your 10E pp bkfst.

Have a happy anniversary.

These are my two favorite destinations and both are sublimely romantic. But for November (and probably any other time, as well) I would choose Paris. If you have never been, by all means go.
