First time trip to Black Sea Coast of Romania/Bulgaria and would appreciate any info such as costs of hotels and restaurants, any info on private home stays. Thought wife and I could start at the southern part of the Black Sea Coast of Bulgaria and work our way north along the coast via local bus and into Romania.
Hoping for a relaxing and economical stay of 3 weeks with towns and villages of cultural interest. Are there (hydrofoil?) ferries traveling the coast there?

6 Weeks Traveling Around: Italy, Austria, Budapest, Paris

Well, it's been 8 months since this was posted! We are planning a similar trip to visit our Virginia neighbors who just moved to Bulgaria for work. Anyone have great travel tips for Bulgaria, Black Sea coast, or whether from there to Thessaloniki, Greece is a good idea?
In Bulgaria we stayed at Varna and a couple of other resort towns on the Black Sea. In Romania we stopped in Mamaia near Constanta for a couple of days. There is a ferry between Varna and Constanta. We drove. The prices for hotels and eating are a pleasure compared to western Europe.
hopscotch:
Mrs F was recently subject to a severe attempt at a shakedown by Romanian passport officials on the road near the coast - something we've never encountered on the busier crossing inland at Rousse/Giurgiu. Fortunately it was so spectacularly greedy ("new law says you must pay $1000") she just told them to get lost and filed a complaint later in Bucharest.
Did you have any similar experience?
Flanneruk,
As I recall we crossed from Bulgaria to Romania on the road going through Mangalia so that would probably be the same point you describe. We waited there about half a day because the Bulgarians were not letting anyone out. They claimed it had to do with a bus load of gypsies who had some guns. While there we talked to a number of other people. Some Moldavian merchants who were traveling in a convoy for security told me the trick is to place a bottle of cheap perfume on your steering column. The guard reaches in and collects his toll. We didn't ante up. My ex-wife walked up to the guard the next day when we returned (it got so late that we went back to Varna on our first day at the border) and shouted at the guard to let us out. He did. We were then in Romania within an hour after filling out the paperwork in their office.
In my drive in the Ukraine I was stopped by police willy-nilly looking for booty. One grudgingly settled for chewing gum. Smokes are also good wampum for these thieves.
