Road Trip through Sweden and Norway

My family and I would like to visit Norway and Sweden for 2 weeks in July. We would land in Stockholm and would like to self drive through Sweden and Norway. We wish to stay in small hotels and B&B. I have driven across the United States, South Africa and several other countries and although this isn't my first trip to Europe I have never driven a car before. Will driving a car be challenging? Can we do this sort of a trip independently or is it best to pre-book accommodation?

We are vegetarians(no fish) - will food be a problem? What would be a good itinerary for 12-14 days?

We would really appreciate some feedback on this trip. Please feel free to chime in if you live around the area or have recently traveled there.

We have visited both Norway and Sweden over the past two years.

On both trips we were based on the coast : In the Swedish Archipelago and between Tromso/Trondheim/Lofotens. In all aspects the coastal regions are fairly stunning. Norway more so than Sweden.

However, on the short trips that we ventured inland in both countries I'd say that the scenery became a little uneventful, much as it can do in The States.

Why not drive up the Norwegian coast from say Bergen?

We are meat and fish eaters but we found the fresh fruit/ veg to be extremely cheap and very good quality in Sweden. I can't comment on Norway as we didn't shop for food.

Driving can be a challenge in the coastal mountains. You might want to take a look at my trip report which includes driving in that area. Click on my name to find it.

You also need to check out cross border one way drop off fees - a Swedish registered car could not be hired out in Norway and would have to be physically returned on the back of a lorry, with commensurate high fees.
Driving through Sweden is boring flat forests. With only 2 weeks just explore around southern Norway. Ideally a round trip from Bergen. Thousands drive through Norway with no problem - there is little traffic and speeds are slow.

We just drove through both Norway and Sweden with absolutely no problems. We rented a car in Bergen and did a round trip up to Balestrand up to Luster over to Flam down to the Hardanger Fjord and back to Bergen ( in 6 days). The roads are very narrow in places but in good shape. The speed is slow due to the roads and ferry crossings so plan accordingly. Then we flew to Stockholm rented a car and drove to Arvika to see family and then back to Stockholm. It is pretty easy to drive. Have a good trip!
