Road Trip From Frankfurt

Hello ,

I am planning a trip with my wife and my parents in law ( who are in their late 70's and still pretty active). We have come up with an itinerary and since it wil be our very first time in Germany We would very much appreciate any thoughts, tips, suggestions on the itinerary we have come up with: We will fly into Frankfurt on May 9th and on May 11th rent a car to drive to Wurzburg wher we intend to visit the Rezidence and have lunch. After lunch we ll drive on to Rothenburg and spend the night. On the 12th we intend to sight see Rothenburg and drive on to Fussen to visit the castles and then on to Munich to spend the night. We will stay in Munich until the morning of the 14th when we intend to drive on to Innsbruck. Two nights in Innsbruck and on the 16th we drive to Vienna. On he 18 we drive up to Prague and on the 21st drive to Berlim where we intend to stay untill the 24th when we will drive back to Frankfurt and then fly back home.

What do you think? Is it too much driving? Should we leave any city out? Any suggestions will be highly appreciated!

Thank you so much!! : )

First feed your proposed rental into whichever rental company you are planning to rent.

Look for driving abroad clause. Different companies have different clauses. Why does it matter? Because you are driving into Czech.

You might see a term like this, All Mercedes and BMW models, ... cannot be driven into ... Czech Republic ...

Other companies might allow with pre-authorized surcharge. You must scour the fine prints for this kind of trip.

Do you have to drive back to Frankfurt? Have you scratched an idea of flying home from Berlin instead?

In general, you are moving a lot. Some days are super hectic. Look at 12th, you are: 1. sight seeing Rothenburg, 2. drive to Fussen and visit castles, 3. then drive onto Munich. Use www.viamichelin.com to do a sanity check JUST FOR THE DRIVING part. On top of that, you need to add visiting time and overhead that comes with a car: parking, filling gas, and rest stops.

If flying to/from Frankfurt is a given(Itinerary works better flying into or out of Berlin). I would tweak your trip front end. Your May 12 is not possible. Also I would substitute Salzburg for Innsbruck(More to see in and around Salzburg).

Then:

May 9 - Arrive Frankfurt, rent a car, Drive 2 hours to Rothenburg. If early enough stop in Wurzburg en route.

May 10 - Rothenburg (worth a whole day)

May 11 - Drive to Fussen (Wies church, even could stop in Oberammergau, or Ettal, or Linderhof en route)

May 12 - Castle day( Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau). Drive to Munich

May 13 - Munich

May 14 - Salzburg

May 15 - Salzburg (Could drive to the Lake District and sleep in Halstatt)

Continue as planned

May 16 - Vienna (Danube River Valley, Melk Abbey, scenic Wachau Valley, Krems en route)

Thank you for the replies.

We have already bought the tickets so we have to fly in and out of Frankfurt.

I have already checked the route with the car rental company so the trip to Prague is ok.

I agree that the plans for the 12th are hectic.

/dugi_otok/, I really liked your suggestion..maybe we will stay just one day in Frankfurt to recover from the trip and then get the car and go to Rothenburg.

We are really more into landscape viewing than big cities that' s why I chose Innsbruck over Salzsburg...but we really liked the night in Hallstatt suggestion...

Greg, I also think we are moving around a lot..

Are the roads scenic ?

Thank you guys

That is kind of zigzagging which gives you just one day in Munich. In view of your preferences, I'd rather skip Munich and proceed from Füssen (take some additional time for the Wies, Oberammergau or Linderhof, as sayed above) via Garmisch to Innsbruck - Salzburg - Vienna.

BTW, Innsbruck is not much smaller than Salzburg.

Road Trip From Frankfurt
Posted by: GeorgeTony on Jan 17, 17 at 10:19pm

A few notes:

The drive from Frankfurt to Würzburg goes through the Spessart, a region of hills. The A3 from Aschaffenburg east is a rather winding Autobahn, but that won't slow the Germans. I suggest that you stay in the right lane unless you can drive 120 MPH comfortably. If you haven't driven in Europe get an illustrated introduction at http://www.enjoy-europe.com/hte/chap18/auto-1.htm.

From Innsbruck you can drive to Bolzano/Bozen and enjoy a spectacular view as you go over the Brennaro/Brenner Pass, both ways.

The village of Hall-in-Tyrol just east of Innsbruck is really a step back in time.

On your way to Vienna I suggest a stop in Graz. The Armory of 16th century weapons is one of a kind.

I suggest that you be within a half hour of Frankfurt airport the night before you leave. German traffic can be as bad as any big city in the USA. Return the auto the day before flight and arrange for public transportation or a taxi to the airport.

Thank you all so much for taking the time to help us out. We highly appreciate all your comments and suggestions. I know I mentioned earlier that we are more into landscape viewing than big cities but after some debating and given the fact tha it's our first time in Germany we are not so sure whether we should leave out Berlim or Munich. We have come up with a new itinerary (widely) based on your suggestions and some research. I would like to ask your opinion.

Road Trip

Day 1- fly into Frankfurt, rent a car, drive to Wurzburg . Sleep in Wurzburg .( OR stay in Frankfurt)??

Day 2- Visit Wurzburg in the morning, drive to Rothenburg after lunch. Sleep in Rothenburg.( OR spend whole day in Frankfurt)??

Day 3- Drive to Fussen via Oberammergal, Ettal or Linderhof. Sleep inFussen. (OR drive to Fussen from Frankfurt via Rothenburg and sleep in Fussen)??

Day 4- Visit the castles and in the afternoon drive to Munich. Sleep in Munich.

Day 5- Whole day in Munich. Sleep in Munich.

Day 6- drive to Salzburg via Innsbruck. Sleep in Salzburg.

Day 7- drive to Viena via Hallsttat (OR stay longer in Salzburg and drive to Vienna in the end of the day)??

Day 8- Vienna

Day 9- Vienna

Day 10- drive to Prague

Day 11- Prague

Day 12- Drive to Berlim

Day 13- Berlim

Day 14- Berlin

Day 15- drive to Frankfurt. Sleep in Frankfurt.

Day 16- day trip to Trier (family). Sleep in Frankfurt

Day 17- fly back home in the evening

Thank you

Day 6 does IMO justice neither to Innsbruck nor to Salzburg. Given that you leave Munich by 9:00 you will arrive shortly after 11:00 in Innsbruck and ready to start your visit by around 11:30. You will need onother 2:30 to reach Salzburg. So, you would have approx. 3 hours including lunch in Innsbruck, which is just enough for a superficial overwiev over the historical center, but you would have to skip the fabulous Nordkettenbahn. You will arrive at your Salzburg hotel just after 17:00 (provided there is no stau on the ever congested Bavarian Rosenheim-Salzburg autobahn, which you will have to return to). That leaves you with very few hours in Salzburg too, given that you need the next morning for your trip to Hallstadt.

Do not forget to purchase a vignette before driving in Austria.

http://www.austria.info/us/basic-fac...r/toll-sticker

There is also one needed for the Czech Republic.

Thanks!!! One more question....what car do you guys think we should rent?? We are in 4 people, with 4 medium size suitcases (23kgs) and 4 backpacks. We would like a car in which we can keep our luggage hidden as to avoid break ins..

Full size van. It will have a covered luggage space behind the back seat.
