Herb,
You were told wrong I think the teller probably meant that there would be a lot of buses on the Ring of Kerry - it is the start of the high season and individual visitors combined with bus tours have made parts of the Ring very busy. My advise start early, take your time, stop and get out of the car and if you feel up to it hire some bicycles. By the way pack some rain gear the weather has been coldish and wet in the past few days. Enjoy yourself

Herb,
I suppose that it is a good point. A car in comparsion to a bus does offer restricted views and with a bus someone else has to worry about the driving and you can enjoy the views. However with the Irish roads and the traffic - tourist traffic including buses and other cars you will not be looking and driving at the same time no matter how high your car seat is. You can still do it with a car - stopping to view different sites. Cathy

Dear Herb: Cathy sounds as tough she's on the scene--but, as a tourist who has done the Ring more than once I'd opt for the bus--not just to see over the hedges but to avoid the hassle of driving on the left side of narrow and unfamiliar roads. And she's right about the raincoat. Have fun. Joan

Herb,
Just to give an option other than using the car. I wasn't coming down in favour of the car verus the bus - just outlining that it can be done but with some drawbacks. The national bus compnay - Bus Eireann run by CIE (umbrella group for national transport companies) do a tour of the Ring and other parts of Kerry. You can get more information at
http://www.buseireann.ie/html/travinfo/tours.html

The following tours depart from Bus Station, Parnell Place, Cork. But I am sure if you contacted them they could give more info'on departure points from near where you might be staying. For further information contact Bus Eireann, Cork at 00-353-21-508188 or at their Dublinoffice 00-353-1-836 6111 e-mail: [email protected]

Remember Monday May 1st is a Bank Holiday in Ireland so it might be better to email them rather than ringing.

The information they have at present is as follows:
(AD3) Ring of Kerry Dept 10.00 Return 22.00 Sun:7 May-24 Sep Wed: 28 Jun-20 Sep Fri: 23 Jun-1 Sept
Adults £16 Children £10 Family £42

(AD4) Inchigeela, Gougane Barra, Bantry Harbour, Schull & Cruise to Cape Clear Dept 09.30 Return 21.30 Sat: 8 July - 9 Sep £18/£13/£49

(AD6) Killarney, Inch Strand,Dingle & Tralee Dept 10.00 Return 21.30
Tues: 27 June - 29 Aug
£16/£10/£42

(MD22) Kenmare, Moll's Gap, Ladies View, Lakes of Killarney Depart 10.30 Return 19.30 Sun only: 9 July - 27 Aug
£16£10£42

There are other tours of the Ring - I am sure your hotel/B&B could recommend one. I Favour CIE/Bus Eireann as they are the longest in the business. Whatever you decide to do enjoy your holiday and I hope you get good weather.

Regards

Cathy

Just throwing out another option,as one who has done both,I'd like to suggest that you drive the Dingle Peninsula.IMHO the Dingle is more beautiful, especially Conners' Pass if you go on a clear day. You'll find much less traffic and there are no negatives.I wouldn't take a bus over a car for any reason, there's nothing like being able to stop whenever you please to"take it all in".Have a great trip !!

You certainly can drive a car without much problem. Go in a counter-clockwise direction - the same as most tour buses - so you won't be meeting the buses head on.

However, I found the Ring to be a big ZERO. There was nothing that I hadn't seen just as nice in other areas of Ireland.

If you do go, I would also go on the Ring of Skelig which is around the end of the penninsula. Buses aren't allowed in that part.

The most interesting part was the part nearest Killarney in the National Park

My wife and I just returned from 5 days in Ireland. We did a coach tour of the Ring of Kerry. It was beautiful. We took the trip on the one day that it didn't rain. We had rain almost every day during a 12 day trip to England and Ireland. Take plenty of rain gear. We were with a group so we really didn't have much choice of car or coach. I didn't think that driving would be that bad. In Ireland even major roads are very narrow. The advantage is that you can stop all you want. There are some fabulous photo opps. -Dave-

I would opt for the bus. I did drive it and found that it is so busy that I didn't see nearly as much as I would have if someone else does the driving. It's a long drive, too, and very tiring. The busses make numerous stops for photo ops and breaks.
