Rijstaffel in Amsterdam

We have one night in Amsterdam before boarding the cruise ship. We are anxious to experience the best rijstaffel and would like recommendations and also advice as to whether advance reservations would be necessary. I am a vegetarian and my husband is an omnivore . Any comments or ideas are very much appreciated.

Suzy, we enjoyed Indonesian rice stables at Kantjil en de Tijger on Spui (I believe) and also at Flamboyant which is on the Amstel next to the Carre Theatre. We did not make reservations for either place. We've also had a Chinese rice table, but I can't remember the name of the place. We like the Indonesian food better than the Chinese anyway. Enjoy your night in Amsterdam - eat early and take a night time canal cruise!

My favourite Indonesian restaurant at this moment is Flamboyant, Amstel 111, 1018 EM Amsterdam, phone: (+31 20) 626 95 65. I haven't had Rijsttafel there, but all the other meals we had were perfect.
Another one that many people like is Tempo Doeloe, Utrechtsestraat 75, tel (+31 20) 625 67 18.
Or try: Sama Sebo, P.C. Hooftstraat 27, tel (+31 20) 662 81 46.
Reservations recommended, usually a day in advance is OK.
Have a nice time here!
Sorry to add to the decision making...but many (and very many locals) believe that the best Rijstafel in Amsterdam is at Tempo Doeloe (pronounced "doo'-loo). The owner, Nagy, comes to your table (there are only a few)...and explains everything. Reservations are essential...no one gets in without one...and I'd recommend making them from the US for sure. Check the guidebooks for the number...when we told our hotel we were going there, the concierge was VERY impressed with our sophistication. He said it was very popular with the locals and Europeans...not too many Americans know about it. I asked him to rate it as far as Indonesion food...he said it was definitely the top place in the city.
By the way...the food was unbelievable. (I have had many rijstafels through the years, including the legendary Bali in Amsterdam...now gone.) This was fantastic...and DEFINITELY not touristy!!
Also...you can order it hot or mild...no problem.

Hi There

Another vote for Tempoe Doele. I took my parents there and they loved it (they had never had the experience before). It is the best in town!

Terra
Hi, Suzy!

We also like Tempo Doeloe and Sama Sebo. Another we have enjoyed is the Lombok Indah at Vijzelstraat 135. The food and service was impeccable, and it was much cheaper than Tempo Doeloe, though the food was of a similarly high standard. I'd say the portions were much larger at Lombok Indah. It is not touristy at all. We did not need advance reservations.

Have been to SamaSebo twice--it is just around the corner from the R. and V.G. Museums, and the trams stop quite close to it. It was recommended to us by a person here, who visits family in AMS each year, and they always go. Have only gone for lunch--before 11:30, you can usually get in easily--time-out from the Museums. It is always crowded but enjoyed the meal--which is the important thing.

Skip Kantjil en de Tijger -- it doesn't have much atmosphere, the food seemed ordinary and the service wasn't particularly good either.

If you don't absolutely need a rice table I'd recommend the Thai-Vietnamese restaurant Indochine -- elegant, a bit pricey with delicious food and fine service. They have a website: http://www.indochine.nl/index3.html

When we visited Amsterdam last August, our hotel had a list of nearby restaurant recommendations... one of them was Long Pura, and Indonesian restaurant. We went there without reservations and were able to get a table. It was the first time we tried rijstaffel and we thought it was delicious. There were a variety of meat and vegetable dishes, most of them fairly spicy.

Here are the details:
Long Pura
Rozengracht 46-48
Tel: +31 20 623-8950
