Riga or Krakow for Christmas break?

After enjoying visits to Budapest last year and Prague the year before, we fancy another eastern European break for between Christmas and New Year (27th to 30th or 31st December). I have found possible flights to both Riga and Krakow and need to find some more about both destinations before making a decision.

Are attractions likely to be open at either of these at that time of year? Is there enough to keep us occupied for 3 to 4 days? Can anyone recommend decent hotels and the best area to stay - with a budget of around 100 euros per night?

A specific question about Riga - the only direct flight I can find, gets there at 23.25 - would this cause a problem getting to and checking into a hotel?

Thanks in advance for any information about these destinations. Maria

I haven't been to Riga for the Christmas market but can certainly recommend Krakow. In terms of the Market and things to do in the city have a look at http://krakow-bestguide.blogspot.co.uk

Having been to Krakow but not Riga, I would go for Krakow.
