Rhone-Alps Long term stay. City suggestions?

I am looking at staying in the Rhone-Alps(Lyon - Annecy) for a few months starting Spring of 2008. Does anyone have any travel experience in this area? Have you stayed in a nice city that could grow on you?

Would you have any suggestions on places that I can research?
- I am looking to rent a house or apartment with high speed internet (requirement)
- I don't want to live in the city of Lyon, but within an hour(or more if necessary) by train would be OK.
- I'd like access to outdoor activites such as hiking and climbing.
- I've read and seen pictures of Lyon and Annecy(both look charming), but do you have any other suggestions in between?

Thank you for your help.

Take a look at the small towns of Montélimar and, especially, Dieulefit. Montélimar has a train station, and Dieulefit is only a 20-minute drive from Montélimar.

Wow. I looked at the tourist sites and some images of Dieulefit. Beautiful village. thank you for the suggestions. Do you know if ADSL or some other high-speed/cable internet is widely available in the smaller towns in the Alps region?

Dieulefit is a village (not a city) in the Drôme, technically speaking in the 'Rhône-Alpes' - the far southwestern corner.

I point this out because it's nowhere near the Alps and certainly not near Lyon or Annecy - assuming that's the region you're looking into.

I think Grenoble, Chambery or even Albertville would suit your criteria...

I would characterize Dieulefit as a small town, not a village. Whatever, it's a great place to stay, and renting a small villa might get you internet access. Good luck!

Yes, I am looking at the Rhone Alps specifically, but welcome other near cities/villiages/towns/etc.

thank you very much for your suggestions. It's difficult to get a feel for a place online and being there for a few months I'd like to gauge the best as I can.

Grenoble is a large university city, with all that goes with a student area. If that interests you, Grenoble would be quite nice, especially for outdoor activities.
