Hi all - does anyone have knowledge of the Mainz - Strasbourg section of the Rhine?
Is boat travel Mainz to Strasbourg possible? I have been unable to find this mentioned online anywhere and am wondering if perhaps there is no service there?
I am in Mainz until 31 March, just before Easter, and therefore right on the edge of the season for tourist river cruises. However also these only seem to go north from Mainz up to Koln.
I thought it could be nice to go by boat south to Strasbourg, as I have to travel on to Paris and the train from there looks to be very easy. Perhaps I should instead go up north and get a train from Koln.
Any information or thoughts will be appreciated!
Thanks,
Jazzpup

The Upper Rhine Valley upstream from Mainz (by the way, I live there) is a wide plain, about 20-30 kms wide, framed by distant hill chains which are not visible from the river. There are no landscape views like in the Middle Rhine Gorge. A boat ride would be a boring affair, all you'll see are the dykes and a row of trees, occasionally interrupted by some industry. Most cities and towns along the river do not have river fronts because of frequent flooding, so you won't see much of them either. I have never heard of a boat service between Mainz and Strasbourg and I don't think there would be a market for it. The landscapes along the hill chains, however, are pleasant to explore, but you'd need to take the train.
I agree with quokka.
