Trip Report Reykjavik Trip Report

Today I would like to share with you my trip to Reykjavik – Iceland. This country is now on the list of one of the most unique places I have ever been as I had so many mouth dropping moments while traveling there. I planned this trip with two other friends who live in London and we had the best time exploring the different landscape and culture. So let’s get started!

Where to stay:

Since I was traveling with two other friends, we decided to rent a flat for the three of us as we wanted to have our privacy. We also needed a place where we could easily park the car we rented, so we stayed a bit out of the city centre. However, whether you're seeking luxury rooms, apartments in the heart of the city, a guesthouse in the suburbs or a more rural setting, you will be able to find something nice, but keep in mind that accommodation in this country can be relatively more expensive than others.

What to do:

Iceland is one of the most beautiful, but also one of the most expensive places I have ever been. In this case, if you are planning on saving a bit of money I would suggest for you to plan your trip in order to accommodate all of the things you want to do and see and prioritize what is best. One great aspect of it is that most of the natural attractions and parks are free of charge. However, food and restaurants, tours and shopping can add up to quite an expense.
As we wanted to have the freedom to see and do what we most liked without paying and relying on tour buses, we decided to rent our own car. This was probably the best move we could have done as we were able to see a lot while planing our trip to our taste, and stop as many times as we wanted for pictures, coffee and food. When we picked up our car, we also decided to rent this mobile router with the car rental company which allowed us to have internet for the whole time we were there, so we could surf the web for the best spots to go, use maps, as well as keep contact and share our amazing experience with loved ones instantly.

We started our trip with driving to the South Coast. We reserved a whole day for this adventure as we were excited to see the waterfalls, glaciers, volcanoes, black sand beaches and general unique landscape we would come across. The drive in Iceland was quite easy as there are not that many cars and traffic around, the only troubling aspect was the heavy rain we encountered a few times and a strong wind. But in general, we had a pleasant time on the road as well. On this day we stopped to see the Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, the Eyjafjallajokull Vulcano, the Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach and went up to Dyrholaey, the Village of Vik and the Eldhraun Lava Field.

On the following day we decided to drive through the Golden Circle. This time the drive was much more straight forward and the attractions were closer to each other, but the landscape wasn’t as mesmerizing as the first day. Our first stop was Pingvellir, which is a national park designated as a world heritage site by Unesco and where the Icelandic parliament was founded in 930. Around there you will also find the Flosagja Fissure and where the tectonic plates of North America and Eurasia meet, as well as the largest natural lake in Iceland. Next we drove to the Geothermal area of Geysir, which erupts every 5-10 minutes. After that we went to the amazing Gullfoss waterfall then to Kerio, which is this unique volcanic crater with a lagoon on the bottom.

The next day we decided to explore Reykjavik and do a little shopping. We not only went to the downtown main shops (which can be quite expensive) but we also went to its flea market to get some Icelandic specialties. Later that day we had our booking for the Blue Lagoon, which is this unique geothermal spa located in a lava field in Grindavik. There you get to enjoy the warm natural water, sparkling wine, and use these amazing masks on your face. This was the perfect way to relax and soothe. To finalize our day, on our way home we were so so lucky and ended up seeing the Northern lights, which was the highlight of our trip as it was so amazing to see this incredible glowing movement on the sky for the first time!

Other things you can do in Iceland is going whale watching, drive a snowmobile in the winter, horseback riding, go diving, go inside a volcano, walk on glaciers or go on an ice cave tour.

What to Eat:

The Icelandic cuisine can be quite intriguing as well. Some of the main dishes are the smoked lamb, the Kjotsupa (which is a meat soup), and the dry fish. However, they also have other specialties and meals that are a little more adventurous to my taste :), which are the Svio (sheep’s head), Hrutspungar (ram’s testicle) and horse meat.
Some typical desserts are the Skyr and the Icelandic donuts.
