Reykjavik and the Reykjanes Peninsual

Originally, I thought we'd spend a few days in Rekjavik (we're coming from the South) and end our trip with a couple of days on the Reykjanes Peninsula, thinking that it would be convenient to be near the airport.
But, I just booked our flight home, and it doesn't leave until 4:45 PM, so getting to the airport isn't an issue.
Maybe we won't need a car in Reykjavik (we love to walk and are usually comfortable using public transportation), and might save money on the car rental if we return the car after our time on the Reykjaynes Peninsula, and then take the Flyerbus to/from Reykjavik.
Thoughts? Thanks!!
