We will need to return our rent car to Orvieto or somewhere similar when leaving Montepulciano on our way to Rome. There will be 4 adults. The car rental would already be paid for that day as part of our last day of a weekly rental.
My question is what would be more economical and doable for four people - drive to Rome and return the car to an easily accessible drop off point (if there is such a thing) or leave the car off in say, Orvieto, and pay for the four of us to ride the train into Rome?
Return rent car to Orvieto or Rome?

You can either drop it at Orvieto and train into Rome, or drive to FCO and drop it off, then do transport into town. I think it might be more fun to drop the car in Orvieto and train it to Rome, if you've not used trains on your trip. It is a pretty ride, and assuming Rome is your last destination in Italy, you will already be downtown.
It's paid for until what time? Car rentals are on 24 hour time periods.
Most of the trains between Orvieto and Rome are R trains (travel time about 1:15 to 1:30 depending on train) and will cost 7€. There are a few IC trains that are about 15€.
FYI - If you are not used to trains, Orvieto is a through station so trains will only stop for a minute or two (1-4 minutes depending on train) before pulling out. You must be ready to board the minute it stops.
Make sure you know the hours the Orvieto rental office is open/closed for the day of the week you'll be heading there. If your timing allows, keep the car (to hold the luggage), park it and explore Orvieto for a couple of hours, then turn in the car in the afternoon.
