Fodor's 2001 Travel Guide mentions that many of Segovia's historical monuments are being restored. That project is until "sometime in 2001." Is it worth visiting that city if the restoration is still underway? I will be visiting Madrid at the end of Feb. and had been hoping to see Segovia. <BR> <BR>I thank you for any information you can give to me.

This is the reply from my friend in Segovia...about the restoration here in segovia....there have been restorations on some monuments, but as far as the big sites to see such as the aqueduct and alcazar, they are perfect. the aqueduct here is the best kept roman monument in europe. there is only one other like it in southern spain and i´ve seen pics and it is not nearly as beautiful as the one here in segovia. still impressive though. alcazar is breath taking. it is not in restoration now. i would suggest that if someone is coming to madrid do not miss the chance to come to segovia. especially since it is only 1.5 hrs away by bus.

Cold, cold and cold (30-45ºF ) but not much rain. Segovia is almost 1000 metres above sea level. Close to Segovia there is a beautiful royal palace situated among lush pine forests that is well worth the visit, it is called La Granja. If you like beans the most famous dish there, is "Judiones", really big beans stuffed. ( tasty !) and also pork roasted. My favourite place in Segovia is Plaza de S. Martin quite picturesque. Good food under the aqueduct and in Plaza Mayor.

Roz, I'm sure you will love Segovia,it was our favorite small town in Spain! Don't miss the Alcazar, it actually is what Walt Disney based Sleeping Beauty's castle on. Also check out the Cathedral de Segovia, another amazing piece of architecture. For dinner try Casa Duque another establishment that's been around for about 100 years! Even if your not a big pork lover you must try it here, it simply melts in your mouth, oh my god am I starting to salivate, forgive me. For lodging try Los Linges, the building dates back to the 11th century and has killer views with huge rooms for very little cash. Have fun!

Thanks for the information about Segovia. I was planning to take the train from Madrid. Someone suggested the bus. Which is the best mode of transportation to take? <BR> <BR>

it has been 30 years since i went, but i went by train and had no difficulty. <BR>i can second the visit to the cathedral, it was very impressive as are the castle (wasn't much in the interior then, i don't know if anthing has been added) and the aqueduct. alos enjoyed a nice dish of 'flan' at a restaurant near the aqueduct

Agree that Segovia is well worth the visit and the Alcazar and acqueducts were impressive. We had a car and driver take us around as a day trip from Madrid (he took us to the Alcazar and then dropped us at the top of the town and we walked down and met him at the bottom - very charming town). The driver was well worth it rather than train travel as we also saw La Granja (the Spanish Versaille) which is about 10 minutes outside of Segovia. Spent about a half day at La Granja in the am and the afternoon in Segovia. Busy day, but felt it was enough time to see the things discussed above. <BR> <BR>PS Good luck hiking to the top of the Alcazar!! Creepy narrow staircase, but what a view.
