Restaurant Recs St. Remy and Cassis

I am looking for moderate priced restaurants with decent menus. We usually spend between 50 to 80 Euros average and will splurge at 100 Euros for a few special meals.

I am looking for recent recommendations.

Thanks in advance

I should have clarified that the price I mentioned was for two people.

Hi! My husband and I were roaming around Cassis in June 2005 and decided to look around the back streets for an "authentic" restaurant. A few blocks from the main drag by the water we spotted a bunch of people eating at tables set up in the middle of a tiny street, and there we found Restaurant Le Bonaparte. It was packed inside, with three men bustling around greeting the regulars and describing the plat du jour in rapid-fire French. The food turned out to be wonderful and it was probably the cheapest meal we had on the whole trip -- I think about 20 Euro each. A great experience! I just Googled it and others have agreed -- the address is 14, Rue du Général Bonaparte.

I haven't been to St. Remy yet, but here are some restaurant recommendations that I have been collecting off of this forum. The comments are by fodors posters (not me) unless otherwise noted.

Alain Assaud
30 to 50 euros
13 bd Marceau, 04.90.92.37.11.Open every day except Sat. noon in summer; closed Wed., Thu. noon, and Sat. noon off season; annual holiday 15 Nov. to 21 Dec. Michelin starred. Recommended by Stu.

Bistrot Decouverte
30 euros for 3 courses
http://www.bistrotdecouverte.com/presentation_en.php
Bistrot Decouverte, 19 boulevard Victor Hugo, 13210 St. Remy, Tel.: 04 90 92 34 49. hours: 12 - 2:30; 7-10pm. closed Sunday evening and all day Monday. We did not order a traditional dinner here, but rather some odds and ends, whatever sounded interesting on the menu. My tomato soup and chicken liver tourine with hazelnuts made for a very nice supper.

Bistrot des Alpilles
3 courses for 33 euros
http://lebistrotdesalpilles.com/anglais.htm
15 Boulevard Mirabeau, Tel : 04.90.92.09.17, [email protected] open: All days, Noon & Evening, All year long.

La Gousse d'Ail
25 or 32 euros menus
http://www.la-goussedail.com/anglais.php
6 Boulevard Marceau. Open from 12 to 14 and from 7 to 11, closed Thursdays. Has an attractive courtyard/ patio. Appetizers- foie gras with carmelized onions, and fig / prosciutto salad, then an excellent tomato-basil soup. For the main course, I had a gratin of salmon and scallops, and John had the "bull" steak. Creme brulée for dessert. Very good.

La Serre
http://la.serre.free.fr/index.htm
PBProvence: Charming restaurant in an old greenhouse in the village - chef is the grandson of Gaston Lenotre. Very good, inventive food, reasonably priced. Dress – casual, 8, rue Commune Tel: 04 90 92 37 21 Open: summer open Tuesday to Sunday starting from 7:30. To reserve Tel.: 04 90 92 37 21 or 06 62 38 65 20 [email protected]

L'Assiette de Marie
29 Euros for a complete dinner
1 rue Jaume Roux; Wed-Mon noon-2:30pm and 7-11pm; June-Sept daily;04-90-92-32-14 From Frommers: Marie Ricco, the Corsican-Italian owner, and her polite staff offer only one dining choice: A 29€ ($38) three-course fixed-price menu whose components change with the season and the inspiration of the chef. Menu items might include une assiette de Marie (Marie's platter), loaded with the Provençal equivalent of antipasti (grilled and marinated peppers, tapenade of olives, and miniportions of brandade de morue) and warm cheese from local goats, resting on a bed of either mache or wild field greens. Pastas, served as main courses, are always made fresh and on-site, and might include ravioli stuffed with seasoned cod, cannelloni stuffed with ewe's cheese and fresh spinach, and an excellent version of lasagna made with magret de canard; a cassoulet of lamb; and roasted rack of rabbit. The dessert choices always include flan. If you opt to dine here, you won't be alone: Diners who preceded us have included Pamela Anderson, Princess Caroline of Monaco, and Rod Stewart.

La Brasserie des Variétés
18-36 euro
32 blvd. Victor Hugo; lunch Tues& Thurs, dinner Fri-Sun

Hi again -- I had another thought about St. Remy restaurants. . . Not far from there (about 7 kilometers, five minutes' drive) is the village of Maillane, and in summer 2005 we ate at a wonderful place called L’Oustalet. We sat on the terrace of the restaurant under a ceiling of grape leaves, and had a meal of the best scallops ever, beautiful asparagus in a truffle oil, lamb chops with an intensely garlicky vegetable puree and delicious potato pancake, my husband's baby duck (ick!!), a sort of lemon meringue pie without the crust topped with strawberries, and something with pistachio ice cream that my husband refused to share. It was great! Not sure about the exact prices, but it was very reasonable.

PS It's right across the street from Frederic Mistral's house -- here's a website with info on Maillane: http://www.provenceweb.fr/e/bouches/...e/maillane.htm

La Gousse D'Ail has jazzz one night. I forget which day,

Bistro Des Alpilles is a great spot for people watching on the terrace]

Don't know if Marie is back, but when she left, the kitchen sank. She also sells the flea market stuff in the restaurant.

The Hotl Les Images was servibg Tapas when we stayd there but the menu changes constantly.

here are a couple more...

Jardin de Frédéric
Small, cozy restaurant with a small outdoor terrace. Good seafood dishes. Friendly owner and service is good.
Closed Sunday and Monday lunch
Dress - Casual
8, boulevard Gambetta Tel: 04 90 92 27 76

A Café–restaurants that offer good value for the money:

L’Industrie – 21 blvd. Mirabeau
(just past the Bistrot des Alpilles)

I'd scratch l'Assiette de Marie... as Cigale said, since Marie left about six years ago, it isn't the same.

We really enjoyed Jardin de Frédéric in St. Remy. The decor is simple, the staff wonderful, and the food delicious. We also ate in a Michelin restaurant in St. Remy that wasn't near as good.

We just returned from France and enjoyed a very nice meal in St.-Remy at:

Cafe le Mirabeau
1 Blvd. Mirabeau (at Avenue Victor Hugo)

My Steack de Toreau with frites and green salad was absolutely delicious and only about 10 Euros. Service was good and prices for all main courses were very affordable.
