It can be simple fare to Michelin *. We are staying at The Fairmont Le Montreux and we are eating at Montreux Jazz Cafe tonight. Very $$$, but very good.

I don’t believe La Rouvenaz serves French food – I believe it serves primarily Italian cuisine with a decided Sicilian influence.
If you are willing to go as far as Geneva (frequent trains of about 1’20” or less). I highlight recommend Bistrot du Boeuf Rouge.

Hi foolforfrance,
I usually don't eat French food in Montreux but rather go for places that serve local specialties, with local produce if possible. Anyway, here are my favorite places in/around Montreux:
Yes, La Rouvenaz is very popular with locals, and no it is not French. They specialize in Italian food and also in seafood. It was actually my sister's and my favorite pizza joint in 1968.... it's rather more upscale now. You can find it directly opposite the TI booth at the lake.
Caveau des Vignerons, up in the old town, on rue Industrielle, serves Swiss specialties, and I had some great fondue there. I've never seen other tourists there, and the other (predominantly male, working class) customers seemed a bit amused at a lone woman among them ... they were friendly and sweet.
Le Jaman, in Glion above Montreux. There is a "pinte" (pub type casual cafe) as well as a restaurant. Again serving local & Swiss food. Had a great fondue there. Again most customers are locals and workmen, especially in the pinte. You can reach it by taking the bus to the Territet gare, then crossing the street and going behind the church and taking the funicular up to Glion (leaves every 15 minutes). Or take the train (leaves every half hour, I believe). The bus and the funicular are free with your Riviera Card.
Hotel Victoria, also in Glion. Fabulous food and even more fabulous views from the terrace overlooking the lake. I think I remember that this is French food.
Le Mazot, in the tangled streets of Vevey's old town. Serves Swiss & local specialties. This is a very casual cafe, with tables pushed close together and filled with locals or expats. Love the atmosphere almost as much as the food.
Hostellerie de Geneve, on the main square in Vevey. Upscale and serving French and Swiss specialties. Their pizzas are amazing, and I love sitting on the terrace and looking at the folks in the main square.
Some friends took me to Cafe le Charly's in Vevey right at the lake, and it was good. Expensive & upscale. But the selling point for this second-floor restaurant are the floor-to-ceiling windows with views over the lake.
I also enjoyed a meal at La Gondola, in Villeneuve, though it serves Italian food. I was there on a Sunday, and it was filled with families with their little children all decked out in their Sunday best. It was delightful.
I've also enjoyed eating several times at the Auberge de Rivaz, in the vineyard town of Rivaz. It serves Swiss specialties, and it's usually filled with the "ladies who lunch" locals.
I usually have my main meal at lunchtime, so I usually eat while I'm out walking or exploring. Hope one or two of these will work for you.
Have fun as you plan!

Swandav and Aliced-thank you for so many
choices!
We did have a big meal at lunch today in
Evian at the quaint hotel Les cynges. We had the
the menu du jour for 20 euros. Excellent food
And price!
I best figure out our dinner plan from all these
Options.
