We will be in Lisbon for a week in May and would love your restaurant recommendations. Mainly looking for Portuguese food, but if there is something exceptional that is not Portuguese we'd be interested. Price wise, from local eateries, food trucks (do they even have those?) to places costing less than 150 euros for 2 people. Thanks!

You'll want to be careful when ordering at a traditional Portuguese restaurant. Servings tend to be on the large size, so you can easily end up sharing a starter and even a main dish, depending on what you order.

You might like Largo, which is open for lunch and dinner (www.largo.pt) and Lisboa à Noite (www.lisboanoite.com).

Bom Jardim for delicious roast chicken on the cheap in a pretty little outdoor square.

I also enjoyed eating Mozambique food at Ibo, which has a lovely setting on the river if you will be there in nice weather.

I have heard Zapata is very nice for traditional food of Lisbon.

I had reasonably good luck following my nose, even in the most touristy areas. I agree portions are often enough for tow, but I happen to really like things like octopus and grilled sardines or grilled mackerel, so I tended not to share. ,)

I ate at a fair number of recommended "restaurants" and thought none of them were as fun as the dives I found on my own.

Another vote for Bom Jardin. Not fancy, zero ambience, but great chicken. Also, grilled sardines pretty much anywhere.

BTW, do you like port? If so, do not miss the Solar do Vinho do Porto.

We enjoyed Pap Açorda in Barrio Alto, modern take on traditional Portugese cuisine.
For good seafood, Pinoquio.
Bon Jardim also has a take out window for their wonderful chicken if you are staying in an apartment.

Perhaps if you eat inside at Bom Jardim there is "zero ambience" (I didn't eat inside) but the small plaza outside the restaurant is perfectly charming and the service was quite friendly.

Yes, thursdaysd, I love Port, so Solar do Vinho do Porto is now on our list.
Good to know about portion sizes, always nice to be able to share.
For the restaurants mentioned are reservations needed? We enjoy finding places on our own, but always like to have a list to choose from too.

I stumbled across the name of an inexpensive traditional lunch place I enjoyed near the Convento do Carmo, which is an historic site of great beauty that is absolutely worth seeing (go on a clear day) and I think key to understanding Lisbon.

The simple eatery is called Restaurante da Calçada, and the exact address is Calçada do Carmo, 35. This was definitely one of the places where you can share food. I recall wonderful fresh seafoods. like octopus and sardines, and even garlic or clam (or both!) soup. It is just a very casual family-run place.

It is also within an easy walk of the Santa Just lift, the Rossio train station and that whole general area. I was skeptical because the area can be so touristy, but it was a pleasant surprise.

We didn't have much flexibility but Aura Lounge was very cool. It seems to be in a popular part of town.

Our lunch at Mercado do Peixe was very good and the grill for the seafood is right in the middle of the restaurant. Very simple preparations that let the fish and seafood be the star of the meal.

Here is the list of places I assembled for Lisbon.

On the level of pure cuisine, I was quite impressed by Cantinho do Alvillez ( I can see how he earned a Michelin star for his main restaurant) though the atmosphere seemed a little anxious and dull -- as though Lisbon residents had saved up their Euros and were trying to make them stretch (at what to us N Americans did not seem like an expensive place at all)

A food blogger recently declared their battered and fried haricot beans were one of the "must eat" dishes of Lisbon. I had them and they are just that good!

Another place we enjoyed was the newly opened tapas bar at the "iconic" Tagide, very close to C do A.From 7 to 8 PM weekdays, order one dish of tapas for 4 Euros and get a free glass of wine, with a killer view over the city.

For deft service and quite nice cooking at moderate prices, we would recommend Sacramento, near the Igreja do Carmo.
