Restaurant in Salzburg for special dinner?

Hi,
My husband and I will be spending a long weekend in Salzburg from August 12-15, to celebrate his birthday.

I'd like to find a nice restaurant so I can surprise him with a lovely birthday dinner, but I'm not sure where to start.

Usually I start by researching this sort of thing in guidebooks, but I haven't bought any this time - it didn't seem worth buying a whole Austria guide just for a couple of days, and I haven't found any Salzburg-specific guides.

We'd be looking to spend up to around 100 euros per person, perhaps a little more if it's somewhere really special (including wine). It doesn't *have* to be a posh, expensive place though - charming, good service and food are what count most - and perhaps a nice romantic atmosphere

Does anyone have any particular recommendations? We'll have a car so transport won't be a problem.

The Monchstein Castle, perched on top of a mountain overlooking Salzburg is a real dream and really posh IMO. They have a restaurant too, and the view is spectacular. Schloss Monchstein is a hotel actually, but they have this restaurant too called Paris Londron and a terrace where to sit in good weather. I would suggest that you contact them and ask them if reservations are necessary. Do also a google search by looking under Monchstein.

Thanks for the suggestion Batuffolina.

In the end we didn't go anywhere special for my husband's birthday dinner as the weather was horrible (pouring with rain, and cold too!) - we ended up having a cheap and cheerful dinner at our guesthouse!

Well, as long as it was cheerful!

For future reference, the restaurant at Hotel Obauer in Werfen (near Salzburg) is a good choice for the region. You can see photos of the restaurant in the "picture book" on their web site.

It's also recommended in the NYTimes.

We're going to wind up our trip through the the Austrian Alps and the Italian lake district with two nights here.

BTilke, the Hotel Obauer looks lovely.

We did head south of Salzburg for one of our 3 days but didn't make it quite as far as Werfen. Spent a lovely few hours in and around Halstatt (until the rain started!).

I'd love to return to the region and spend a bit more time there. We booked this trip as a last minute thing and took the first accommodation we could get (a guesthouse called Simmerlwirt, just south of the city, which fortunately turned out to be good value and very pleasant).
