Residenza San Pantaleo

This week I have been attempting to make Oct. reservations at Residenza San Pantaleo in Rome but my email keeps coming back "service unavailable". I have been using the address on their website: [email protected]. Does anyone have a different address or a suggestion? Many thanks.

Just returned from Rome, and my girlfriend and I (we left our hubbies home this time) stayed at the RSP (recommended here) for 2 nites last week. What an experience!!!

A couple facts on this place...and I think it's only right/fair to share them so others can make an informed decision...then decide if it's right for *you.

1) The rooms look NOTHING like their website or their own brochure. We reserved a double rm. The 1st night (of 2), there was some sort of screw-up, and we were escorted to a rm that was about 8x8 (no exaggeration), 1 double bed, consisting of a 3" cot (JUST LIKE like your typical pullout couch bed) with 1 sheet and 1 thin blanket. The second we opened the door from the hallway and looked inside at our rm, we just wanted to leave and/or cry!!! (but it was too late to go find some other place to stay, and this rm was all the RSP had available)

We're normal-sized women, and we had to take turns walking in the rm. We just wanted to leave right then and there, but it was 9pm and we'd had a long day...(plus, this was the only rm RSP had available.....so??)

Fiorio (I think his name was), the keeper (not the owner), appologized profusely (he knew this was ridiculous for us, or *any 2 people), and said he'd move our bags for us to the rm we were supposed to have, for our next night. He also said he'd discount the 99Euro for this inconvenience. (Well, he did.....a whole FOUR EURO!!!!) We were *now able to splurge on an xtra cup of coffee somewhere!

2) They advertise the rm comes w/bfast. Well, you shouldn't/can't expect much from a pensione, but "breakfast" at RSP consisted of Nescafe' instant coffee (I saw him make it), 2 slices of white toast, and 2 small OJ drinks (the kind from a can)

The 2nd night, we got a larger room (thank God!), this time a larger double bed (same cot, with the 1 sheet+blanket), and a bathroom shower smaller than anything we'd ever seen in our lives. (approx. 2 sq feet)...Once again, I am not exaggerating here, believe me. And fyi: bring a washcloth if you use/want one.

All night long, and especially early in the morning, you'll hear people stomping by your door (ceramic floor). And you can't help but hear every single word of a normal-level conversation, much less when Fiorio wants to raise his voice and yell down the hall at 4am to tell a guest something or have a conversation.

Just 2 women's experience, is all. Like I said, I think it's only *fair to know what to expect...and if that's still ok, go for it! The price is good, but I've just gotta believe there's others for the same $ with a little more comfort, is all.

Very sincerely,
Laura

In response to Laura - we also stayed at RSP a few weeks ago. Our room was very large and comfortable (could have slept 4 easily), although it overlooked a noisy street. Florian was pleasant, but not very good with English. There were no washcloths, but I think this is typical in Italy. The breakfast was very mediocre indeed. On the plus side, the location is fabulous - close to Campo de Fiore, Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, and all those wonderful winding streets and alleyways in the old part of the city.

Sorry to hear that Laura had a fairly unhappy experience during her stay at RSP.

This is opposite to the one week stay that my wife and I had last May. My wife and I found RSP and its hosts to be really great. RSP is not a Hilton and we did not expect that. But it more than served our purposes, our room was very clean, a good size (actually more than we needed) and safe.

The street noise from down below can be a little disturbing if one has a room on that side but we were able to sleep thru it with no problem.

The breakfast is very basic but this was not a problem for us as we wanted to sample breakfast outside.

But, again, not everyone has their needs satisfied like everyone else. This is what makes the world go round!

I think the best thing for all of us is that we are at least seeing the world and not sitting at home like so many others!!

Happy trails to all!

Bob

Laura,
Do you remember what room numbers you stayed in that were horrible. And the people that had good rooms, what numbers were those? I have a reservation for may. At the advice of people on this site I reserved a room that did not face the street because of the noise.

Thanks

Natasha,

I forget our room number but it was one that overlooked Vittorio Emmanuele which is a very busy street. I'll admit it was noisy but it wasn't unmanageable. Plus, we shut the windows once in awhile.

I would address your needs to Carlo at RSP via email. He was helpful to us during our stay there last May.

The price and location were perfect for us and if we go back some day we would stay here again.

Hope this is helpful to you.

Bob

So sorry I cannot remember the rm #s. I think there's only 5 or 6 rooms all together, so the fact we stayed in 2 awful ones was just a matter of some really bad luck I guess, *especially when reading others here talk about how lg their rms were. In addition to the 2 rms we experienced, however, I did happen to see inside one add'l rm, (where the door was left open after people ck'd out) with same cot beds pushed together and smaller than the 2nd rm we were moved to. (no idea on the bathrm)

So now that I think about it, 3 out of 5 or 6?? Now, *that's real bad luck, eh?
I do remember the 1st night's rm (the handsdown worst of the 3) was at the very end of the hall on the right, right next to the door where Florio comes in and out, running up and down the stairs to where he apparently lives, and where he prepares the instant coffee, etc., on a sm bathroom sink. I believe the other 2 were rm #s 2 and 4.

Believe it or not, I am not a difficult person to please. Just wish I would have had *any idea what to expect. The website shows a beautiful rm (Florio told me it was for 3 to 4 persons), and the brochure you can pick up at RSP shows another nice room which Florio said was also for 3 to 4 persons. So best of luck if there's only 2 of you.

Laura

I hope I don't come across as simply a complainer. It was just an honest account of *our experience at RSP, for what it's worth.

Laura

We too stayed at San Pantaleo at the beginning of our trip to Italy for two nights in mid April. There were four of us, two adults and two kids and we stayed in Room 5, I believe the same one as Bob. It looks out across the busy street to Campo Fiori. The traffic noise was loud but we loved the location and liked watching the street scenes below. Room 5 is for four people with a king bed and a twin bed and a cot really. The third bed would not be comfortable for an adult but my 11 year old did not complain and slept well. There was also another mattress under the twin that could be added to the cot/sofa bed. The floors are tile. The bathroom is small but modern. The shower had plenty of hot water and good pressure when we took showers. We did not hear any noise through the walls but did hear some noise from the halls but only in the morning when we were up anyway. Breakfast was coffee, packaged plum cake, yogurt and juice (we found most juice in Italy had a canned flavor). The staff and Florian were nice and accommodating. I used the computer to check my email which was expensive compared to internet cafes (5 euros for 15 minutes) but very convenient). Best of all was the location - we walked everywhere from there - and the price - 40 euros less than Primavera in the same building.
Lori

When we were there, we saw Primavera in the same bldg (1 floor down?) and we both thought it looked so much nicer, and peaked into their separate b-fast room - very charming too. It was only 40Euro less?? What a no-brainer, in my opinion, just to avoid even the *chance of going thru what the 2 of us were forced to endure. Because it's such a fantstic location, that's where I'm staying next time (esp. if there's only 2 of us).

Laura

Now I am getting frightened. I have reservations for room 5 for two people, in three weeks.I asked for the biggest room and after reading Laura's post, I don't know if I want to stay there. I am paying $150 in Florence, $160 in Venice, and this place was only $100. I am willing to go up to $150 for something nicer than this if her post is true. I do not need total luxury, but I certainly don't want a dump. Lori, can you tell me more about room 5. How small is the bathroom? Are the sheets and bedspreads clean or very old looking. Would you stay somewhere else now? Sometimes saving a few bucks can mean the difference between a great stay and a miserable one. If I want to come back to my room at night is there a desk or table? If it's pouring down raining you don't want to sit in a room that's awful. Lori, please advise. Any others too please? And if you have suggestions for something around $150 in that same area that is nicer please let me know.

Kat, Please e-mail me about our reservations at the San Pantaleo. I have mine for June and I would like to talk to you about what you know and if we or I should consider the Primavera. I got the same price on a website and it's in the same building and newer with a breakfast room Please e-mail me so we can talk. I tried to e-mail you but it was sent back as not a valid address. Mine is good. Thanks Karen

We stayed at the Hotel Primavera for four nights this past April and loved it! Nice (and quiet) room, good price, and we loved the woman and her grandson who work there (we didn't find the mother to be as friendly.)

Since it was in the same building, I also went upstairs to look at the Residenza San Pantaleo and that looked very nice too. I think I'd choose the Primavera first but would gladly stay at the San Pantaleo if the Primavera was booked.
