RER from CDG to Saint Jacques Hotel

I have a quick question. We are staying at the Saint Jacques Hotel at 35 Rue des Ecoles 75005 and would like to take the RER there after we land at CDG. The hotel website suggests we takeit to the Saint Michel Notre Dame stop, but it is not clear if we have to then transfer to a different Metro train or if we are close enough to walk to the hotel from the RER stop. We will each have one bag on wheels.

If we need to transfer, to what train and do we need to buy a new ticket?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Ken

They have a map on their website which marks the hotel and all the metro and RER stops, you can decide for yourself.

That is really not a very convenient location for coming from the airport by RER. It is closest to Maubert metro stop as you can see, but you have to walk about half the distance as from the RER stop to the hotel just to get to the Cluny metro stop to transfer to the other metro line. That RER does not have a stop on the same metro line you need, that's the problem. Walking from the RER stop might be about 500 meters, I'm guessing, but beware it is a bit uphill, not flat. Not a huge hill, but it is a grade.

YOu don't need to buy another ticket, though. If it were me, I'd choose another transport method. IF you had only one small 18 inch bag on wheels, it's just a bit of a hike, that's all, you can do it.

Firstly, the cost of travel via the RER B from CDG to any station in Paris is 9.25€ per person.

Secondly, to reach 35 rue des Ecoles will require your walking, either from St Michel, Luxembourg, or via a rather long underground tunnel form St Michel to Cluny/la Sorbonne and then boarding M10, direction Austerlitz, and exiting Maubert/Mutualité (from where you will still be walking to your hotel albeit a much shorter distance).

Thirdly, I might recommend you go to your hotel´s website and print out a map to have at your disposal once you start your walk to your hotel.

Lastly, if this is your first time in Paris, I should strongly recommend your taking a taxi from CDG, approximately 50€ to 55€. It will cost more than what you might otherwise pay but it will be a great deal easier.

Thanks very much for your responses, very helpful.

There are four of us and the guide books suggest that it is hard to get a cab for all of us together, but we could take the airport shuttle bus which, it seems, drop us off at our hotel with at most, an extra stop or two.

Does this make sense?

At CDG it should be very easy to have the attendant at the taxi stand hail you an SUV or van-like taxi. There are many groups like yours that require a larger vehicle. Even if there is a supplement charged for a larger vehicle, you have 4 adults to absorb the cost.

No, not at all.

Airport taxis can typically carry up to 7 and luggage. 4 will not be a problem. Expect to pay, in addition to the fare of about 50€ to 55€, 3€ for the 4th (and subsequent) passenger and 1€ per bag placed into the trunk (after the first which is not charged). I generally tip form 3% to 5% which many Parisians might consider excessive.

There is no airport bus which drops off near your hotel. The closest is probably the Air France bus #4 which drops off at Gare de Lyon still leaving you quite a distance to travel to your hotel. Cost is 17€ per person.

This guide book might be referring to a shared ride shuttle service from CDG to your hotel. Shared ride shuttles are expensive, particularly for 4, and can be the slowest among all transportation options as you wait for others to board the shuttle at CDG and wait as you drive around to drop them off. Then there is the reliability problem for which Parisian shuttles are famous.

For a group of 4 people, a taxi is the low cost, easy option. Do not accept offers from clandestine drivers soliciting from within the terminals. Proceed to the taxi platform, usually but steps from the customs exits. You may want to have the name and address of your hotel written on a piece of paper to preclude destination confusion.

You can pay most tax drivers with credit card if you wish, just clarify your intentions before you board the taxi.

Just a suggestion -- have the name and address of your hotel written so you can hand it to the driver.

I would just walk from Saint Michel-Notre Dame. It is a good introduction to the atmosphere of the neighborhood.

I agree with kerouac. I am a middle aged woman and I've walked it several times. Unless you are elderly or have mobility issues it is not a bad walk, very straight forward and through nice neighborhood. The last time I took a taxi was about ten years ago, there were four of us and it was over 60€ so unless prices have gone down I think the 55€ is on the low side.

BTW, the St Jacques is a great hotel.

I've taken taxis to/from CDG most years for quite a while to the Left Bank, including very recent years, and have never paid 60 euro, although I know four people add on just a bit in terms of luggage or the extra person (a few euro or something). I think 55 euro is about right. I never paid even close to 55 euro 10 years ago, rates have gone up a bit. I used to pay around 40 at that time, 45 at most. IN any case, split four ways, that is a rather modest amount of money per person (12 euro) for the transportation right to the hotel compared to the RER.
