renting a car in Spain and driving to Portugal
We are using public transportation for much of our time in Spain, but would also like to rent a car part of the trip. Is it possible to rent a car upon leaving Sevilla to travel to Portugal and then drop off in Madrid before flying home?

No problem! We've done it several times, but it is a long drive from the Lisbon area or the Alentejo back to Madrid. It can be done in one day, but we normally do it in two days. The last time we spent the night at the Parador in Cáceres before heading back to Madrid, stopping for lunch at the Parador in Oropesa.
Check with Auto Europe or Kemwel regarding a rental car.

Thanks for the suggestion of taking 2 days to make the drive back to Madrid also.

this is in response to your posting on my question. we usually go to carrental.com and they give you a variety of rental options. skyscanner and kayak are similar sites. just don't rent in portugal because the rental fee in lisbon was 2x or more than in madrid. you may also find it more expensive to drop the car off in madrid. might consider driving back to sevile and taking train to madrid.

I had no cost renting from one city in Spain and dropping off in another Spanish city. The extra cost applies when you drop off in another country.
Sorry, but the one way drop off fee depends on the car and location. Country to country is different.

Whether or not you can take the car over the border, is usually mentioned in the special conditions of the rental company/broker. If not, do ask because some companies do not allow to take the car across the border, even if you drop it off in Spain again later.

If you hire a Spanish registered car you have to lean how to pay the electronic tolls for Portuguese autovias; in advance.

If not you may end up paying for them later plus the hire companies charges.
