My parents and I will be in Italy this April, and were thinking of renting a car to explore Slovenia/Croatia. I know many people rent cars in Italy and drive over, but I am wondering if it might be cheaper to take a train and just rent a car there. Has anyone done this, or know if it's possible? Thanks!

IMHO, I think it is far cheaper to rent a car in Slovenia and then, drive it down to Croatia. It is possible (we are renting a car now due to registration problems) and there are no problems with driving it to Croatia--unlike possible issues if you rent in Italy.

My wife and I flew to Ljubljana this past fall and planned to rent a car there and drop it in Dubrovnik. However, there was a significant charge to drop it anywhere in Croatia so we took a train from Ljubljana to Zagreb and rented the car there.
From my investigation at the time, the cost is not so much a factor of driving into another country as it is dropping the car in another country.
We plan on renting a car in Ljubljana and returning in Dubrovnik. Any further information on this would be appreciated. thanks,
