renting a car in germany
want to rent a car in Germany in Sept for about 1 week.
any tips on companies, what to avoid, recommendations?
should I pick up the extra insurance or is using an amex card sufficient?

If your amex card covers the insurance and your sastified, don't buy the extra.
I use whomever gives me the best deal. autoeurope, kemwel, gemut, hertz. Check them all.
Be aware of what type of fuel the car requires.
I always recommend reading through the road rules for anyhwhere you drive.

We've rented through Andy Bestor at www.gemut.com for our last 3 trips to Germany. We also use the AmEx Premium Car Rental Protection for the CDW ins.

When they say, "use the card as your insurance", that means collision. The liability insurance on rental contract is OK, so long as it doesn't void the collision insurance on the credit card.

I always rent from SIXT Rental company. They have offices all over Germany. We rent from them about 4 times a year (for the past 4 years) and have never had any type of problem. They also tend to have the best rates.

Note that some credit card insurance plans have caps on the value of a car. I have seen in the $50,000 range. The car you rent could be worth more leaving you on the hook... be sure to check this.

Don't pick up a car at a train station or airport in Germany, that adds a 19% surtax. It doesn't affect the price to drop it off at an airport or train station. Talk to Andy at Gemut.com about the best place to pik it up. They say diesel is cheaper than gas, i am not sure. I always use the CDW insurance on my CC. If yiu go into Austria you will have to stop at a gas station near the border to buy a vignette for Austrian road use. Bone up on International road signs on the internet before you go.
