Why would you rent a car in Florence? If you want to do day trips, rent for the day or use public transportation. A car in Florence is a huge burden that would not add much to convenience, just the opposite.

Typical unhelpful fodors reply
Q: Where is the best place to ___________Z?
A: Why do you want to do that??
I am assuming anik is asking because they want to have a car to travel outside Florence - it's a simple logical question that doesn't take a lot of explaining to understand.
Here's my input.
Most people here on fodors recommend renting a car from the airport. It is very close to town and easy to get to by taxi or bus, and you avoid any issues inadvertently driving in a limited traffic zone (ZTL) and getting slapped with with a hefty fine.

Yes, on our last day in Florence we would like to rent a car, for our next leg of the trip.
Thank you for the airport idea. How does one gets into the airport from Florence? Is there a rental car places in Florence?
Thank again,

We rented a car right in town and were given explicit directions on how to exit the town without hitting the ZTL area. It's been almost two years and we haven't seen a ticket on our CC bill yet, so I think we did it successfully! Save your money and rent from in town.
We used AutoEurope and the car was from Hertz.
P.S. A hint if you want to drive the backroads, as we did to get to Montepulciano: even though you're following a numbered route, the road signs indicate the towns instead of the numbers. So you write down ahead of time (we were given an excellent route listing from a poster on TA) the towns you will be passing, and follow the signs at the roundabouts for those, as opposed to trying to follow numbered routes. Have a wonderful trip!
