Renting a boat on Greek islands.....
ok so off to Paxos in a few days a keep hearing that renting a small motorised boat is the thing most vacationers there do to get to all the nice coves etc etc round the island. This is something we really want to try but now the time is coming are a little nervous...
We are complete novices about this and not sure whether it is something most people do freely without worrying about stuff going wrong or whether this puts a lot of people off (bad weather, big currents, break down etc etc). (we have been told there is not an issue with getting a licence etc etc)
I'm hoping we are just being over the top and worrying over nothing as we really want to do it but hoping to find out whether others are nervous about this or whether we should get on with it and stop worrying.....
We are there for 11 nights and it being such a small island, renting a boat for days sounds like a great way to spend the day but just wish we weren't so nervous!
thanks in advance

The only thing I would worry about is how much it will cost to rent a boat for several days. I can't speak for Paxos, but the island I usually go to has a company that rents several types of boats with outboard motors. The smaller ones, 30 hp, don't require a license.
Using an outboard is fairly simple, and as long as you use common sense you shouldn't have any problems. The seas around Greece are fairly calm, except on windy days when the rental company won't let their boats go out anyway.
Here you can see a price list for boat rental on Antiparos (I would imagine Paxos has similar rates). Click on "Antiparos Boating - Small and Speed-boat based on Antiparos" Prices for 2011 are at the bottom of the page:

Sounds like you're obsessing just a bit! No-one is forcing you to rent a boat!! Take your time over the first couple of days, explore the island (we hired bikes) and talk to some other people who have hired boats. From what I remember, the owners are pretty strict on where and where not to sail to so that you don't get in the way of other boats, and steer clear of dangerous currents. Once you don't stray to far from the shore, you'll be fine. On the other hand, you may decide that it's just not for you, or you could decide to just go on a guided boat trip.
Enjoy Paxos - it's a lovely little island. There's not a huge amount to see or do but it's very relaxing and easy-going.
