rental cars

Hi. I am looking into rental cars for our Nov. trip to Italy and Sicily. We will be arriving at Naples airport, picking up car, and driving to Monte Cassino to visit family. We will then drive to Sorrento, stay for 2 nights and drop off rental car at Naples airport again before taking a quick flight over to Palermo for a week in Sicily. My question is this. I have been comparison shopping, some companies have insurance and VAT included, others don't, it's hard comparing apples to oranges. What advise does anyone have for me? Will also be renting car in Sicily (pick up Palermo, drop off Catania). I am trying to watch how much we spend. Thanks.

Has anyone used Car Italy? or a website called rental car group.com that quotes prices from Thrifty, Alamo, etc? Thanks.

Hi anj,

You are required to purchase the CDW in Italy. Your credit card won't cover the collision and damage iliability.

The usual CDW come with a hefty deductible. You might want to buy the Super CDW.

www.autoeurope.com also offers a zero deductible plan.

You must also have an International Driver's Permit, available from the AAA for $10.

PS,

You might want to drop the car when you arrive in Sorrento and take the bus to Naples Capodichino.

Absolutely agree that it is necessary to take CDW and if you are in the Naples area you probably need the super level.
On my last trip to Rome I noticed that Fiat seem to have a subsidiary that is offering very competitive deals, so you may want to look into that.
Another option might be to look at Auto Europe.
Just one thought if you are flying transatlantic direct, you may want to avoid Hertz or Avis, the queues (lines) to get the car can be horrendous particularly Fri, Sat & Sun.

A similar trip here going in December. I found that by renting the car in Rome, pretty much parking it at the hotel for 5 days, driving down to Pompeii, taking the ferry from Naples to Palermo, then 5 days in Sicily, dropping of at Palermo airport was way cheaper than doing 2 individual car rentals. SNAV has a special on the overnight car ferry.

I always use AutoEurope, as they have good rates and don't hide things. I have a $125 deductible. Total car rental cost - 10 days--$455. Ferry, including private cabin--$200.

Have rented car car in Italy 4 times and found best rates at

http://www.sbc.it/en/prenotazioni/index.asp

Call your credit card about insurance. Visa and Mastercharge told me they would not cover a car if I bought the rental company's cdw except in Italy because you cannot rent a car without it there. good shopping.
