Rental car drop-off

We are spending two nights in Assisi (rental car parked in a lot).
Next we go to to Rome. We are thinking about dropping car off in Spoleto and taking train to avoid driving in Rome. Does this sound good?

If there is a rental car drop off at Spoleto, then sure it sounds good. It's a very small town so I would not count on it.

If not, consider Orvieto as your drop off/train to Rome location.

Or just drop off the car in Assisi when you arrive then take the train.

You have a few options, but sometimes it depends on which rental car company you are using. They do not all have locations in Spoleto or other towns. I suggest checking autoeurope.com or kemwel.com, entering your pick up location and then these drop off locations-

Foligno (your closest option, just south of Assisi. The rental car locations are at the train station, so it's an easy process.)

Spoleto

Orvieto

Chiusi

Perugia (you may encounter more traffic getting to this drop off. Make sure the drop off is near the correct train station for trains to Rome)

Also, if you are not using the car while in Assisi, consider dropping the car off in Foligno and then taking the short train ride to Assisi. From the Assisi train station it is a short public bus ride or taxi up the hill to the town.

Look at dropping off in Foligno which is not far from Assisi and has good train connections to Rome. If you don't plan to use your car while in Assisi, you could drop it in Foligno instead of leaving it parked. Foligno is only 13 minutes by train to the town below Assisi (Santa Maria Degli Angeli) and then catch the local bus up to Assisi. I think there are also buses from Foligno to Assisi, but I haven't used them.

Looks like zoecat and I were typing at the same time.

If you use AutoEurope and enter pick up/drop-off that aren't the same company it will say no cars available. You can look up on Hertz, Avis, etc. their locations and then you will know which to select on AutoEurope.
