Rent car from Lecco or Como when leaving Bellagio?
I'm trying to reserve a rental car for our family when we leave Bellagio in June, in order to drive south, and eventually drop it off at Rome's train station upon arrival. My Bellagio hotel suggested renting it from a car agency in Como. Seems I've read that Lecco (on the east side of lake) also has rental car agencies, and it looks a bit closer. We will have our kids, and I am trying to minimize our scramling around in the morning, since we'll be driving to Florence via the coast. Do you know if it is more efficient to rent from an agency in Lecco or Como (am assuming we would have to either take a taxi to Lecco, or a ferry to Como?) Also, any suggestions on the easiest beach town on the Ligurian coast, where we could stop and enjoy for a couple hours would be great! It seems that many of them take awhile to actually drive into, with all the winding roads and traffic. Thanks in advance for the advice!

To get to Lecco, you could take a train from Varenna. But taxi or train, you'll have to take the ferry from Bellagio first. There's also a boat to Lecco. However, the hydrofoil to Como is just one step and it only takes 45 minutes. That's probably your best bet.

Thanks Minmar. Do you know if any of the major auto rental agencies are within walking distance from the hydrofoil station in Como, once we arrive? Am trying to figure out what the best place to rent from is, based on location, cost, etc. Thanks!

If I were you, I'd pick up a telephone and call AutoEurope at 1-800-223-5555. Ask for one of their "Italy experts" and ask if they have pickup points near either the Lecco train station or the Como ferry terminal. Usually someone will be able to help you specifically. Since AutoEurope uses a range of suppliers, they should be a good source of that kind of information. They may be the best people to rent through also.

Guanciale - In Como the main rental agencies (Avis, Europcar) are in Viale Innocenzo XI - near S. Giovanni station.
Too far to walk with luggage, I think
Here's a map:
