rent auto France vs trains?
My spouse and I are flying to Paris France to visit my brother who has farm near Vimoutiers, France ?
.He suggests flying to Charles De Gaulle Airport, taking train to Licieux, France. Then renting auto and driving northern France for five to seven days. Then flying out of Paris for Rome. Can anyone say whether this is feasible economically? How much would a rental midsize auto charge daily? With unlimited miles?
Thank You

Check http://www.autoeurope.com for pricing. They are brokers who can usually get you the best deal. Most rentals will be unlimited miles and no charge to drop at a different location.
Feasible economically? I certainly think so but Bill Gates would have a different budget from Joe the Plumber! ;^)

we have taken the train several times to all directions in France - take it especially if you can board right at the airport vs. going downtown to other stations. there are very cheap rates if you can book on line - I would not drive in or out of Paris after one scary drive a few years ago. Check Autoeurope for a car and rates - best we have found.

I like your brother's suggestion. Although trains work great when going point to point, they tend to restrict you to city/town centers. So much of the countryside is beautiful and best toured by car. From your question, I assume you plan to return home at the end of your trip from Rome? If yes, make sure your plan includes returning the car in France rather than driving to Italy. Returning a car in a different European country can include very high drop fees. You're best to fly from Paris to Rome.

One option is to rent car from CDG, that way you are already out of the city. One issue may be that when you land, do you really want to start driving jet-lagged.
Note..if you are going Paris-Rome on discount airline, could be different airport than CDG.
The train system is quite good.
