Rent a car: Florence ( or near by) and drop it in Rome (or near by)

We are traveling to Tuscany at the end of September. From Rome we are taking train to Florence. Staying there for 3 days and starting our journey through Tuscany. My question is: where would be the best place to pick up car in Florence (or near by). also, out last destination is Rome. I thought that it wouldn't be very practical to drive into Rome. Maybe someone can recommend where can we drop off the car on a way to Rome. We are coming from Umbria.
Thank you

Dmitriy

Orvieto is in Umbria and many people, including me, have used it as an easy place to pick up or drop off cars and then train to Rome.

From Florence, my favorite pick up point is the Florence airport, but be aware that the rental car area there is in a new location and you'll need instructions, but not if you take a taxi from Florence. They'll know.

Umbria is a big area. Which towns are you visiting as there would be several options for return.

We have rented cars in both Rome and Florence. I would recommend renting nearby in order to avoid driving in the big cities. Too easy to waste time getting lost. And you can't enjoy the sights when you are focusing on trying to find the next turn. Last time we flew into Rome and trained to Chiusi where we picked up our car before driving into Tuscany. Much easier.

I usually rent at the Florence airport. It's fairly easy to get to the autostrada from there.

I posted a similar question and many people have recommended picking up from the Florence airport. This will avoid entering restricted zones in Florence which carry heavy fines. The taxi from Florence central to the airport is approx 22€. You can look at dropping the car in Chiusi and then catch train from there into Rome.
