refund due to German rail strike
We had prepurchased round trip tickets from Warnemunde to Schwerin for May 5 - they were non-refundable fares BUT then on that day, there was the rail strike. There was an agent at the local office but she said, since we had purchased on the internet - we had to get our refund thru the internet. From what I have read, it appears we can get a refund by handing in the tickets at some office in Germany - HA. Any advice? we purchased with AMEX - is that a possible route to a refund? Fortunately the tickets were quite cheap but I would like my money back!

Hi suec1,
Here's a link to the "Passengers' Rights Form that you'll need to fill out:
http://www.bahn.com/p_en/view/bookin...ine-form.shtml
(Download from a pdf button on the right-hand side of the page)
And here is information about getting reimbursed from DB:
http://www.bahn.com/p_en/view/bookin...ensation.shtml
The instructions are in English, but the form is in German -- though it is clear enough that you can use google translate to translate what you need to. They give you an address to mail the claim to.
Hope this works!

I bought first class tickets online from Prague to Berlin with a day and a half stop over in Dresden (May 8th -9th). The train got to Dresden but the strike affected the Dresden -Berlin stretch. The DB provided buses from Dresden to Berlin.
I went to one of the DB Service offices in Berlin. They told me to write a letter in English explaining what happened and what I want compensation for (the first class part of the trip) with a copy of my ticket (printed). When I came back the next day, the clerk filled out the online form for me and sent the whole packet to the Customer service center or something like that.
She couldn't tell me when or how I'll get compensation (or if) but I had to include my bank details, so I guess I might get something.
It won't be a lot but it's the principle.
If you are still in Germany, go to any DB Service office at a major train station. If not, try filling in the online form.
Good Luck!
