Hi, pepnjak,
the two main centres in the Peak [no S] District are Buxton and Bakewell - either would be nice, but i have no idea whether you want to stay in a town or the countryside, in a hotel or a B&B - of which there are many. try www.visitderbyshire.co.uk for accommodation ideas.
However, what I do know is that the Buxton Festival is running while you are there:

this may be an advantage or disadvantage for you, but if you are interested, you should book your accommodation asap.
In May 2007, we spent two nights at the YHA Hartington Hall hostel - http://www.yha.org.uk/hostel/hartington It's a lovely old house with its own mini-pub. We had a private room with en-suite bath in what used to be the carriage house. Hartington isn't far from Bakewell, and it made a wonderful base for our time in the Peak District.

What is your budget and what sort of property/style would you like?
One of our favorite walks so far was out of Hartington, but I'm sure there are many more.

Having a car will make things a lot easier to get around though I hear it's not impossible without one.
If it outside your room budget have dinner here. If it is outside your dinner budget have lunch.
