I went to St Petersburg last summer and instead of staying in one of more popular hotels i stayed in a mini hotel. It was a good call. They cost much less and are located in the very heart of the city. My hotel actually overlooked central canal called Moika river and had terrific pastry for breakfast. For anyone going to St Petersburg next year I recommend to consider staying in one of its great mini hotels.

are you from russia?
im not so sure pastries are what gets people in but anyhow...
how were the mosquitoes in the month you stayed in this wunderbar minihotel?
do i need to pack an air- rifle?
i hear the mozzies can be shocking near the canals

>>>how were the mosquitoes in the month you stayed in this wunderbar minihotel?<<<
Precisely the main reason we avoid Russia in summer. I just returned last month from my third journey into Russia (and first to Belarus and Ukraine)...I find early fall much better..not a mozzie in sight, anywhere. Would much rather bundle up a bit, instead of going slap-happy belting mozzies (and black flies!)

I am originally from Russia, but live in New York now. I went to St Pete in June and did not have a problem with mosquitoes. I think it really depends on the weather though. Russians themselves buy cheap but powerful decide called Fumitoks that scares off mosquitoes from their homes.
oh too late Tower!
we are all bundled up ready to go in late may/june
so if the mozzies are out then we will be ready
i wonder if this product fumitok the russians use for mosquito protection is safe by western standards
i know that lots of things were banned in the usa and hapless aussies still use them today!
What was the name of the mini hotel? That sounds nice.

Feliks, what other mini-hotels in St. Petersburg would you recommend?

Feliks, it would be great to hear your recommendations. It will be very useful for my next trip to St Pete.
Feliks, I don't have any concrete plans to visit S.P. but I would love to bookmark any suggestions you might have. I suppose my criteria would be definitely cheaper than Pushka Inn without sacrificing location, convenience, safety and charm - you know, the usual. Many thanks for your time.

Thank you, Feliks, I will check those out.
How about Moscow? What hotels would you recommend there?

Felinks, Izmailovo is horrible. I have been there and refused to check in after I saw the room. It felt like being in GULAG - not in a decent hotel. Any other suggestions?

I am staying at the Nevsky Grand Hotel. Great location just of Nevsky Prospekt a couple blocks from the Hermitage. I think this place qualifies as a mini-hotel. Paying 70 Euros but would normally be 100 E.

Hello! Why do you consider hetels only? Why no a private apartments to stay at in the city center?
Well, if u`re gonna stay for less than 5 nights, then it`ll be very difficuly to rent apartments in the city centre. And if you do find then the price will be higher though it won`t include any breakfast or dinner. You`ll have to cook it by yourself.
There are serviced apartments in St.Petersburg that offer good accommodation for a decent price. They will change the sheets, stock the refrigerator, and offer airport/train transfer services. One such place is http://www.pulford.com. All the apartments are in the center and the cost is about the same or less than hotels in the area.
Stay at the Angleterre Hotel in St. Petersbug.
Nice and right in the city center. I just came back from Russia and really enjoyed this hotel.
Re Kappy's suggestion, I'm just back from St Petersburg and I think I'd enjoy the Angleterre as well but it looked very expensive! We stayed just round the corner at the Petro Palace. Not cheap either I have to say but a bit more moderately priced and just as good a location. Rooms were nothing special though.
Mini-hotels have largely taken over the lower price of accomodations that used to belong to the short stay apartment rental. A larger family still should consider an apartments, there are several rental agents who have a large stock of available apartments. Pulford was mentioned and is reputable, as is CityRealty, an American owned business. The lowest prices I've found and have used myself before I moved here full time 6 years ago is Irina at http://www.introbyirina.com/
Another individual I've known for years who has two really nice apartments, one is right near the Anichkov Bridge that carries Nevsky pr over the Fontanka River....great location.

There are lots of nicely priced mini-hotels in good locations, but even there tiny sized facilities(2-18 rooms or so) are not what is to be termed "cheap". Old Vina is one I have visited a number of times in the city center near St Isaac Square/Cathedral. B&B Nevsky pr is in a very good location on Nevsky. Herzen House is close to Nevsky and St Isaac Square. One very close to my home is Nevsky Inn at http://www.nevskyinn.ru
There are a number of large western hotels that have recently or about to open which will drive prices down because the new additions will almost double the total number of hotel rooms available compared to 2 years ago.

In the interests of accuracy I must disagree with Rushotels about the Izmailovo in Moscow. I stayed there June 2008 and thought it much better than good.
True, I have never stayed in a 5 star hotel and tend towards the cheap n cheerful end of the spectrum wherever I travel (a single room in a hostel - nowadays it would need ensuite too most of the time - would always be first pick). But my critical faculties still work and my room at the Izmailovo Vega (the budget block) was super clean, had a comfy bed, TV, kettle, fully tiled bathroom with copious hot water and windows that opened. I guess it was business class (16th floor) and I paid c.160USD if I remember rightly. Staff at reception spoke good English and were friendly and efficient. Staff manning the onward travel arrangements counter were exceptionally helpful when I went to book a train ticket to St P.
Don't let Rushotels put you off considering the Izmailovo - Moscow is very expensive and it is a perfectly acceptable "bargain" with good transport connex too. I wonder what more he/she needs.
Cheers.
Although this thread is a little dated, I am bookmarking it.
We will travel to St Pete and Moscow in April of 2010 and are just in the early stages of making plans.
tatersalad >> Wow, planning your trip already?!
I've just came back from S-Pete and have to admit it was amazing! For the first time I went for the mini-hotel and didn't regret it! It was Acme-hotel (http://acme-hotel.com/en-about-rub.html). Girls at the reception are very nice, smiley and extremely helpful. Rooms are clean and cosy. Moreover you get huuuuge breakfast and the city centre location.
Really, I got more than I expected.
Good luck there and safe trip!!!

I can second fragile's recommendation: Acme Hotel was fantastic! We stayed there last summer and thought it had a very boutique hotel like feel. Great rooms, amazing location, friendly staff. Would stay there again in a heartbeat. More info and pics in our St Petersburg post at http://patrinadoestheglobe.blogspot.com/

I live in Washington DC and my parents are coming to stay with us for at least 6 months in April. I would like to rent our apartment in Sankt-Petersburg for a long term. The location is great-in the very center of the city, on Marata,10-15 min walk to Nevsky prospect, with 3 different metrostation less than 5 min walk each. It has one bedroom + living room and the kitchen. There are TV, phone, high speed internet, washing machine and everything for cooking in the kitchen. The style is a beautiful and you will fill comfortable. The price is $1300 per months (utilities incl.)Please, let me know if you are interested and I can send you photos. Thanks!
Mini-hotels and boutique hotels are very popular in St Petersburg as there is a lack of space in the city center for construction of new hotels. From this problem we also find many companies renting apartments in St. Petersburg. Each offers a different experience. Apartments allow you more freedom, while a hotel offers a more structured stay with additional assistance if necessary. For example, handicapped visitors to St. Petersburg will find it difficult to find hotels with wheelchair access and rooms which are designed for handicapped guests. One such hotel with both wheelchair access and handicapped rooms for guests is Hotel Vera - http://www.hotelvera.ru Very often handicapped travelers are overlooked and I hope this post helps such people to see St. Petersburg in all its glory!
