Recommended hotel in Tellaro has a 9 month cancellation policy without penalty! Is that reasonable?
We were making reservations at the Locanda Miranda near Cinque Terre for October, 2002 (yes ~ yes, I know that is almost a year away). We had heard many good things about the hotel in this web site and print (Karen Brown).

Everything about the reservation was acceptable to us EXCEPT the $US200 required deposit check was non refundable after JANUARY 1ST, 2002 ~ 9 months before our arrival date.

I think this is unreasonable BUT I FULLY SUPPORT their right to set whatever policy works for them. Incidentially, we have the same type of reservations with Pension Accademia in Venice but they have a 7 day cancellation policy. We love Italy and are return visitors.

2 questions: 1) In your opinion and based on hotels generally in Italy, is this policy reasonable? AND, 2) Do you know of any alternate hotels in Cinque Terre area?

Thanks!

Hi Duck! I am no expert, but I have found that hotels in Italian cities (Rome, Florence, Venice, Verona, etc.) have very lenient cancellation policies (cancel 1-3 days before). On the other hand, I have just reserved a hotel in the Dolomites (in a ski resort area) that required a non-refundable 20% deposit. There seems to be a lot of variability based on the location and the hotel and I would be interestd in knowing what other travelers' experiences have been with resort areas.

In Sardinia I have found several hotels (for July 2002) that want my credit card to charge 30% of the entire stay now. If I cancel at any time, even next week, they keep that deposit. So far I have managed to avoid all these, but the pickings are getting slimmer and slimmer.

We had a great three night stay right in Manarola next to the "harbour" at Marina Piccola. They have a wonderful outdoor restaurant as well. No website to my knowledge, but their fax is 187-920966. That is an older number -- do I remember right that you now have to put a 0 in front of the 187? A couple of years ago it cost us about $65 US for a double.
