I'm wanting to stay in London in June 2014 - am very keen to go to some theatre/opera in West End venues so looking for accommodation within walking distance. I don't have a big budget, so am not sure how realistic this is - $100 AUD per night. Anyone have suggestions? thanks

$100 AUS is £54 which isn't going to get you a hotel room in the areas you've listed. You would need to double it (at least).

If you must be those areas consider a room in student accommodation if your dates match when students are no longer in residence. www.universityrooms.com/en/city/london/home

I like premier inns - they are safe clean and have some great locations in central London.

But agree that for £54 you won't find a decent place to stay in those areas. I think even hostels in central London cost more.

IME -- your only hope would be a travelodge and hitting one of their (very date specific) on-line specials. But even their prices have risen and the centrally located ones are often well over £100.

Other than that - a hostel would be your best bet.

I'm sorry but 50 pounds just isn't a hotel room price in the very center of London - even assuming you are 1 person or a couple that can share one double bed.

You can check out Priceline to see what prices people are getting in those areas - but I'm assuming that even modest but pleasant places are going to be double or triple your budget.

If you are single and young I would consider a hostel - or look at discount sites for places that are not too far away by tube - Earl's Court usually has a bunch of very budget modest places.

This is the link for Airbnb in London, using $90 US which is about $100 AUS. There are over 1000 listed so zoom in with the map and zero in on the areas that interest you. You should easily find something on your budget.

Cheap hotels in London can be bleak and I think if you don't want to significantly increase your budget then a stay in a private residence will be the logical option.

If you want to save money you may find that the amount you spend on public transport is less than the additional cost of accommodation if you stay a little further out, in places like Earl's Court or Clapham. Note - there are plenty of night buses, and buses are cheaper than the Tube, if slower.
