Recommendation for Reasonable Boutique Hotel Near Placa Catalyuna?

We haven't been to Barcelona in over a decade;last time we stayed as young newlyweds we were at the Avenida Palace and loved the location but didn't love the small, dark rooms. This time we managed to get a great rate at the Fairmont thanks to our President's Club upgrades etc but realized that it is too far out of the city center. Most people on these boards did NOT recommend it. We then thought Hotel Ofelias because a friend had been to Barcelona in February and loved it. A bit of research showed it is four metro stops away. A bit far. We want something newish and bright and airy etc that is off las Ramblas/ near the Placa Catalyuna. I stress a newer boutique hotel only because it will be August when we visit and I want to increase the chances of better than average a/c. I recall from the last trip how hot it got! Any suggestions?

Muchas Gracias,
Lisa

I can think of a couple of places that have great A/C but they aren't "newish" and all the other things you are insisting on but topping this so others can respond.

You thought the Avenida had "dark" rooms? Which ones were you in anyway?

Banys Orientals and Hotel Neri would most likely fit your bill. Both within a five min walk from Placa de Catalunya in the direction of the medieval and vibrant Born area.

Banys Orientas is smaller rooms but fabulous value at just over 100e/night for a double, whereas Hotel Neri is our best hotel experience ever after some thirty years of intensive traveling in Spain. 20 % off if payed more than 30 days ahead (not refundable), which for us meant some 200€ for a double.

Banys was almost 300 a night for the dates we need in August. And it looks like only 2 can fit in a room. We are three (my family) in one room and 2 in another (parents).

About 150 or so a night with a breakfast would be great. We need two rooms. I am looking at SixtyTwo Hotel, Hotel Bakery Prasnik, and Europark as well. I've been looking at photos and reading reviews. They all seem within the neighborhood I want to be: Eixample. Are you familiar with any? Which would you lean toward ? I really love Ofelias Hotel but for metro stops away seems a bit far .Thank you so much for your help!

150 USD doesn't buy you much in Barcelona, which is always in high season, August included. You won't find much in L'Example, but there is the Catalonia La Pedrera at Córcega, 368, Eixample, next to Avinguda Diagonal and Passeig de Gràcia that may fit your bill, depending on your exact dates (hwww.hoteles-catalonia.com). It's a nice 4-star property and the area is within walking distance of Plaça de Catalunya.

What about flats? Check apartur.com for the various Barcelona options. Multi-bedroom flats for <$300 aren't too hard to find.

And I'm hoping the 150 is per accommodation, because you'll find nothing of supra-dump quality for 75 per room for two rooms.

Actually I messed up. About 250 a night is fine. With breakfast. Big issue we are having now is three to a room. My son is 11 and H10 Metropolitan and a few others are only doubles

Not sure if there are triples, but we loved the Murmuri in the Eixample. It didn't include breakfast and though breakfast was served in the hotel, we enjoyed the restaurant next door.

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Catalonia Square on Ronda de Sant Pere. Prices were very reasonable; received a bottle of cava delivered to our room upon arrival; lounge area served free food during the day. Rooms were modern and very comfortable. Would stay there again as it was very convenient to good restaurants, bus to and from the airport, shopping and many of the historic sites.

Thanks, amigos

We ended up having very few options that had triples. I couldn't believe the websites and ended up calling a few hotels directly and speaking with the reservationists. Ended up at the Hotel Sixtytwo and was able to get my triple there. Parents got a double. Now on to the fun stuff like planning restaurants! If the Fairmont had been closer to the city center I would have gone with that deal in a heartbeat!
