We'll be spending a few days in London and Paris this July for the first time in ten years. Is it reasonable to expect to find nice two star hotels for $150/day. If yes, can you suggest any that you've stayed at? If not, what's a reasonable price range?

And if not hotels, how about apartments?

In Paris, it is possible you can find a nice 2* hotel for that price (which is only around 115 euro, you know), but probably not in the most central areas where a lot of tourists like to stay. And probably not the few 2* hotels that have AC, with you might want in July.

For Paris, it can make a big different if your dates are before or after 7/14, also, as some hotels offer end of summer discounts after that date. But the cheapest 2* hotels might not, I just know a lot of the places I stay offer a 25-33 pct discount after 7/14.

I haven't stayed at this place, but it is an example of a good 2* hotel in one of the most popular areas in Paris, it's around 127 euro for a double in early July (but 144 for the nicer rooms) http://www.hotelclementparis.com/

Here's another example of a 2* in the Latin Qtr, and it is cheaper but I don't think it has AC http://www.hotel-collegedefrance.com/

The other hotels I know that were good 2* hotels are now all 3*, including ones I have stayed at. They are higher than your budget. I think a budget of more like 150 euro per night would give you much more selection in Paris. for example, I really like Hotel Langlois and it is cheaper than some because it isn't in the most popular tourist area, but it is still very convenient. Same way with these 2 I've stayed in and liked, they are now 3* and cost above 150 euro http://www.hotel-st-thomas-daquin.com/ See, you can see on that website, the rates go from about 185 euro to 149 euro per night between the beginning and end of July. The Clement's rates drop also towards the second half of July.

You also get better rates if you are staying at least 3 nights.

As for London, I haven't spent as much time there, but my impression is that their hotels are about 1* below the comparable level in Paris, ie, a 2* hotel in Paris is okay but in London it would be a whole lot cruddier.

We always stay at http://www.hotelbonaparte.fr/. It is a 2* in the 6th. Very convenient to metro, bus, sights, etc.

How many is "we"? If you are talking a couple who can share one double bed - difficult - esp in London but perhaps possible. If more people - no - not possible.

Ira - Sorry the bonaparte is showing 139 euros per night for a basic double without breakfast. Sounds like a fantastic deal to me given the location but more than $180 per night.

Priceline.com is good for London. You should be able to get a 3 or 4-star hotel for $150. If you're not familiar with Priceline, read betterbidding.com first.

I have stayed in nice 2 stars for that price, with a/c too.Hotel Diana, excellent central location. Rooms are small but clean and a/c worked well .

We recently stayed in Waterloo Travelodge for AUD 40/night. Book ahead special. It was comfortable, convenient and clean.
