Razors in Italy

I have to admit I am confused because I am trying to figure something out that isn't for me...for my parents.

I seem to recall special outlets for razors in some of the hotels in Italy that I've stayed in. I don't use one personally so I've never tried and don't even know the settings on razors.

If there is an outlet in the bathroom with that little razor logo can one just plug in their U.S. electric razor and go with it?

I realize blades are easier btw...

No the razor socket in a bathroom in Europe is still 220 volts. It is designed to be use only by an electric razor, not, for instance a hair drier, which would be illegal - hair driers are only allowed if they are hard wired and nowhere near a source of water.

mdtravel, in most of the hotels I have stayed, there is a 110 volt outlet specifically for razors and yes you can use it. Just make sure it is 110 volts. I have also used it to recharge my camera battery as well. Worked fine!

mdtravel, I can't answer your question, as I don't use one and never paid attention, but don't you just love it when you get two completely opposite answers?

Susan,
That is a great comment. I had already started typing the email to my father (and father-in-law actually) after the first one and then boom!, the second one undoes everything.

Hopefully a third or fourth poster will tip the scales in one direction or another.

Yes, it is marked 110V/50~ (~ is cycles) but it is only for *very low* wattage things like an electric razor.

It also IME has a 'ground fault circuit breaker' in the same electrical box outlet as the plug.

IIRC: If it (razor or whatever) drops into a sink full of water that you have say your hand in you will not get zapped into the next life.

These 'ground fault circuit breakers' kick-off immediately when a small current surge is detected.
Without one of these babies you would need in the US at least a 15-20+amp current to blow the fuse or circuit breaker.
But you would very likely be dead before it blew the fuse/breaker if at all.

I have only used them to recharge my cellphone but passed on recharging my 4 camera batteries using it because I thought it might be too much.
Regards, Walter

I'm going to let Walter be the deciding factor here and tell both my pops and my wife's pops that they can take their razors and use them just fine...but that they should strongly consider freeing up space by using a blade for a few days.

Thank you for settling it Walter.
