Rail Travel: Eurail Pass or Train Tickets

Will be traveling from:
Vienna to Salzburg
Salzburg to Augsburg
Wurzburg to Berlin

in October 2016.

Should I book separate train tickets for my spouse and myself or purchase a Eurail pass?

Eurail passes seldom save money, but do the math for point-to-point and see what is best.

See http://seat61.com/Europe-train-tickets.htm

You need to price this both ways, bearing in mind that train tickets bought ahead of time for specific trains are cheaper, and that there are various local passes in Germany. Do NOT price tickets on Rail Europe, use the country-specific rail companies listed on the site I linked.

A Eurail pass give you first class tickets and convenience but at a price. I did it once when I was spending six weeks in Europe and traveling quite a bit but I have never done it since because point to point tickets are so reasonable. With only three train rides, you'd be throwing money down the drain.

Prices vary considerably, depending on hour and day, but tickets from Würzburg to Berlin and from Salzburg to Augsburg can be as cheap as EUR 29 when bought in advance.

Vienna to Salzburg: E25.50 each with Westbahn, buy on the spot: https://westbahn.at/en

Salzburg to Augsburg: E28/2 adults with a Bayern Ticket using regional trains, buy on the spot: https://www.bahn.com/i/view/USA/en/p...a-ticket.shtml

Wurzburg to Berlin: Prepurchased saver fare at DB on high-speed, long-distance trains: Maybe E19 ea. for this stretch if you purchase ASAP and can commit to specific travel at a specific time. Check the DB site for your travel date.

That adds up to E117.00. You cannot get 2 Eurail passes for that.
