Quickest way to get from Milan (airport) to Murren?

Hi there!

My husband and I are planning to come to Murren Switzerland for 3 days during our trip to Italy. We are debating if we should drive from Milan to Murren or take a train?

Any advice/feedback is much appreciated!

thank you!

You can't drive all the way to Mürren, as you probably know. Google Maps says it takes 3 hours and 40 minutes to drive from Malpensa airport to Lauterbrunnen (which I think is the closest you can drive), and Swiss Railways ( www.sbb.ch ) says it takes about the same to get there, by bus to Domodossolo and train from there, changing at Spietz and Interlaken.

Since Google Maps often understates the driving time, I would guess that the times are about equal.

You cannot drive to car-free Murren, high up on a cliff but must park your car at Lauterbrunnen and take the cablecar/train there.

and once there a car is useless.

The train is IMO the best option:

Milan Central to Spiez via Domodossola and Brig - some go direct but often change at Brig

Change at Spiez for Interlaken-Ost - transfer there to train to Lauterbrunnen - then take able car and once up top at Grutschalp take the train to Murren.

Go to www.trenitalia.com and searchfor discounted tickets Milan Centrale to Murren or to Spiez or to Brig - whatever is available - www.sbb.ch is the Swiss Railways site - once in Brig reservations are not required on Swiss trains (they are to Domodossola from Milan and come with the ticket) so you could just buy in Brig or Spiez a regular ticket to Murren if you can't get a thru ticket from Milan.

Check www.seat61.com and www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com for info on trains. Trains probably will be cheaper than a car rental, gas and the mandated $35 or so sticker to use Swiss autoroutes.
