I'm planing a trip with my boyfriend this september around Europe. We've been doing a lot of research but I'm not sure our plan is doable (mostly because we'll travel with public transport). We fly to venice and return from prague 11 days later. We were planning as follows:

- venice (1 day)
- trieste (1/2 day - we're only stopping there because venice is really expensive and we needed a cheaper / closer to slovenia place)
- ljubljana / bled/ zagreb / maybe samobor (3 nights - 2 whole days and 2 half days)
- budapest (2 days)
- bratislava (1 day)
- vienna (1 day)
- prague ( 1 day and a half)

any info and opinions would be really useful. thanks in advanced!

My first impression is that this is too much and you'll just spend most of your time on a train going from one place to another.

It would be helpful to know what your budget is and your interests. If you search for hotels on TripAdvisor.com click on "Specialty Lodging" to see some less expensive options such as Hostels. Maybe that way you can cut out Trieste and Bratislava.

With 11 days I would focus on 2-3 places: Venice, Vienna, and Prague maybe.

Consider, when you ask the question is this "doable", you must know that it isn't. Or even if possible, a complete waste of your time and resources.

If you can't afford Venice, stay nearby (Padua?) and take the train in to Venice.

Taking the train to Budapest from Venice you'll change in Vienna. Budapest is less expensive so take the night train from Venice, arrive in the morning and spend the day in Vienna. Go on to Budapest for several days.

Then Prague. That would be a decent trip, I think.

Agree - way too much time in transit versus the very limited time actually doing/seeing anything.

For the cities you are talking about anything less than 3 nights (2 days) is a total waste of time IMHO.

I think MmePerdu has some good ideas. I wouldn't have thought to stay in Padua.

Before you give up on staying in Venice, check out this web site: http://en.turismovenezia.it/Where-to...472854644.html where you have options that include rooms and hostels.

I would limit travels to Venice, Budapest, Vienna, Prague. If you can find a direct train from Budapest to Prague, go first to Vienna, and then Budapest.

Trains are more comfy than buses and may be more expensive but outside in most of those areas are rather cheap - you can take overnight trains too like when heading back north to Budapest but yes your trip is too rushed (even for me - a notoriously fast traveler who enjoys going between places on trains as much as the places themselves but most are not like this).

Anyway for lots of good info on trains and getting the cheapest tickets check www.seat61.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com.

If on a tight budget spend more time in the old Yugoslavia or Hungary or Czech Republic then in more expensive Austria or Italy.

In Venice you can get really cheap hotels at that time of year in the Lido, just a short boat ride from Venice proper. And check on boats Italy to Croatia -some go at night - saving on a hotel.
