Questions on using the GPS on an iPhone in Europe

I have an international data plan so I know the GPS on my phone will work in Italy (and I know it will be expensive) but will the directions be read in English? As my phone is registered in the US I think so but want to be sure. I am new to the iPhone and haven't used the GPS function abroad since I got it.

Why can't you download maps to your phone before you leave home? There must be navigation apps available for the iPhone that work offline.
Is Here maps available for iPhone yet?

The language spoken will be whatever language you have set up in the settings for the app/phone.

I meant to add that GPS doesn't normally require a data connection to work.
Certainly on Android and Windows phones you can use the GPS to navigate without a data connection. I find it hard to believe iPhones are any different.

the only reason I DO use GoogleMaps for navigating in Europe with my android phone is because I have unlimited data.

TomTom Italia in the App Store. Works flawlessly for driving and walking in countryside and major cities. Doesn't use any data. Turn cellular data off on iPhone, but don't turn on airplane mode.

It's $40 (I think) but totally worth every penny.

Pro Tip: before leaving for trip, get GPS coordinates for all of your destinations and landmarks. You can easily do this by finding the location on google maps on your PC. Right click the location and choose "what is here?" The Gps coordinates will show in the top left box. Jot them down and input them into the TomTom app.

You want to avoid using addresses. GPS coordinates are accurate and reliable.

To input the GPS coordinates into the app, go to "change settings>manage favorites>add>coordinates"

You can store about 40 favorites which should suffice. You can always delete and add as needed on your trip.

Enjoy. Let me know if you have any questions.
